Navy shatters Mukesh’s rooftop helipad dream

Mukesh Ambani’s dream of taking off in his chopper from the helipad constructed atop his home in Sea Wind, Cuffe Parade, will have to remain a dream.

The Indian Navy’s western naval command on Wednesday categorically ruled out granting permission for air operations from residential localities in south Mumbai.

Though the state government and the civic corporation have already given Ambani the go-ahead to construct the helipad on Sea Wind, the Navy said it poses a security threat to vital naval establishments in the vicinity.

Authorities do not want to take a chance with a landing facility that they have no control over.

“There is no way that the Navy is going to grant permission to Sea Wind for chopper operations,” said Vice Admiral Sanjeev Bhasin, flag officer commanding-in-chief of the western naval command.

Bhasin said it is not safe to operate a helipad in a residential area. Responding to a query on terror threats, he said: “It poses a great threat to residential complexes around the apartment.”

The existing ‘limited’ sanction given to Ratan Tata to fly his chopper out of Taj Wellington Mews is also being considered. “The Navy has sought to cancel the permission that allows Ratan Tata to fly from Santacruz airport to Colaba in his private helicopter,” he said.
