Is it worth it to build Shivaji Statue in India?

. .
1. You do not have any distant idea what Marathas (savior of Hinduism according to you) did to Bengal. Again its no point in bringing it here, you just drew the card.
the way the benagali hindus turned out to be in modern times .. i think they got what they deserved.
2. And it was a Bengali who, before any one else (let alone Maharashtrians) made the first authenticate research on Shivaji. Also in this cosmopolitan age, all these talks of regional exclusivity sounds moronic to me.

In a state, that is notorious for farmer suicide (3000 died in 2015 alone) and where 17,000 women and children in tribal areas just perished in one year due to malnutrition? You must be joking. This statue is an insult to Chatrapati Shivaji.
i dont think they died because govt lacked fund. they died because of mismanagement, apathy and corruption. and statue or no statue these issues needs different remedies.

At first I know that 1.5$ mil of early 1900 is not same of today's but my question is: Is it worthy to spend on monuments to revive heritage and give sense of pride and nationhood at such high cost when you can spend that on public for same (care, ownership, nationhood, etc)
I know spending on nation symbols and culture is vital but why so much on one statue?Construction of a world class Temple, Mosque, Gurdawara and Church will deliver the same message of unity and heritage (as far as of previous 800 years).

P.S. Its India money and their wish how they want to spend it.. I just need profound reasons for academic purposes.

Hope you people know that shivaji massacred gujratis and even desecrated Hindu temples ..:)

I am sure when Taj Mahal was being built no one would have ever thought that it will be declared one of the wonders of the world hundreds of years later. History is always pride of great civilizations, it is what a civilization in other parts of the world known for, it makes people of those civilizations love themselves and it can also make some people really really mad (@Atanz :D), definately has psychological effects. People can complaint if governments are building only statues with no development at all.

At first I know that 1.5$ mil of early 1900 is not same
$1.5m today is $3.5b. That makes Shivaji statue worth $215k of 1900.

@scorpionx

Shivaji's contribution to India is his successful battle to save Hinduism
This is the reason he is India's Hero

Marathas starting from Shivaji saved Western and Southern India from Islamists

If Bengal could not do so in the medieval ages ; then it is not Maharashtra's problem

Read Jadunath Sarkar's books on Marathas and their role in saving India

Very true. I've been wanting to say this to Bengalis for a long time. Please learn how to fight, and start fighting now. Things not looking good for your state if recent events are anything to go by. And you've elected a closet Islamist on top of that.

how it is related with farmers suicide?
So you agree, health programs are under-funded? Will come to farmer suicide just next.

So being a Bengali, one can't oppose a stupid move? what kind of retarded logic is this? Now I am starting to assume, that given that my linguistic group being unknown here, typical ultra-nationalist and hard core racists would have kept their mouth shut in a meaningful discussion.

You would have come across as a hardcore terror apologist commie even if your linguistic group was unknown. There is commie smell in everything you write just like everything about me screams ultra-nationalist.

@scorpionx at a 100% rational level money should be spent on priority on infra, health, agri related infra, education etc.

But politics in India is hardly ever rational.

OTOH politics in Maharashtra is not THAT bad, say compared to Bengal.

So I don't think Maharashtrians like it too much that after attracting and peacefully hosting the largest no of internal migrants they are not even entitled to a bit of populism and that criticism coming from people from states with decades long history of anti national and anti poor politics evokes this admittedly unfair reaction.

If maharashtrians can not build anything "symbolic" until all other issues are resolved, then that argument is patently unfair too.

He can paint Shivaji as a sacker of Bengal. Conveniently missing the point that Shivaji was fighting for territorial control and consolidation. Empire building. Hindu empire building. He will paint Maharashtra as some sort of destitute state where farmers are dropping like flies. Forgetting the grinding poverty and lawlessness in his own state. On a Pakistani forum. And then he is outraged when more than one member gives him some home truths about Bengalis and the state their state is in. Great.
