Spurred on by uproar over satellites, Iran relaunches manned space program

Sep 15, 2017

TEHRAN – Iran’s on-off space program has received a boost from Washington’s irritation at a recent satellite launch by the middle eastern nation, with Tehran dusting off plans for a manned mission, perhaps with Moscow’s assistance.

“Ten skilled pilots are currently undergoing difficult and intensive training so that two of them … can be selected for the space launch,” the head of the science ministry’s aerospace research center, Fathollah Omi, told the state broadcaster last week.

He said the plan was to put humans into suborbital space “in less than eight years.”

“In preliminary talks with Russia’s main space company, we have agreed to cooperate on this important project and we are waiting for their definitive answer.”

Russia has not confirmed the talks, although deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin, who oversees its space program, visited Tehran two years ago to discuss potential collaboration.

The Islamic republic’s scientists are also celebrating the fact that two monkeys they fired into space in 2013 have recently given birth to their first baby.

“Aftab and Fargam were two monkeys sent separately into space and returned alive. Researchers are studying the effect of a space trip on their baby,” said Omi.

Iran’s space program has progressed in fits and starts.

It has sent a turtle, mouse and worms into space, and after the successful voyage by the monkeys, then-president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced he would like to be first to go up on an Iranian rocket.

But he was out of office a few months later, and the whole program appeared to have been mothballed earlier this year due to financial constraints.

“It was estimated that putting a man into Earth orbit would cost around $15 billion to $20 billion over 15 years. As a result, the budget cannot be allocated for this project,” the deputy head of Iran’s Space Organization, Mohammad Homayoun Sadr, said in May.

That decision appears to have been reversed in the wake of the international furor over Iran’s testing of a new satellite launch rocket in July.

The 500-kilometer (312-mile) range rocket — named Simorgh after a bird from Persian legend and with the words “We can do it” inscribed on the side — was launched from the newly inaugurated Imam Khomeini Space Centre in Semnan province.

The United States in particular balks at any technological advance that might also benefit Iran’s ballistic missile program, and Washington quickly threatened fresh sanctions.

Omi confirmed the plans for human spaceflights, as well as a new 1,000-km-range satellite-rocket, had followed the “great reaction from the world” to the Simorgh test.

“The Islamic Republic reacts very negatively when it feels it is held back,” said Adnan Tabatabai, an Iran analyst and CEO of Germany’s CARPO think tank.

“Iran’s nuclear program and particularly its research and development became all the more prestigious and important the more that Iran was under pressure by the West to halt it,” he said.

Iran’s four launches of domestically produced satellites since 2009 have all sparked condemnation from the West.

The new Communications Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said Wednesday that a new satellite, named Doosti, was waiting to be launched.

“You send orbital satellite carrier rockets into space, and all of a sudden you see they have created uproar about it in the world,” said supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in August.

“It is a task which is necessary for every country and which is completely normal and ordinary.”

The controversy appears to have re-energized the space program, which is run by the defense ministry.

“Its leaders like to literally show that the sky is the limit to Iran’s technological progress,” said Tabatabai.

“And that safeguarding revolutionary ideals and religious ideology can be reconciled with modernity.”

Obvious mistranslation in the above. An astronaut into orbit by 2025 and a suborbital flight maybe by 2021!

Official: Iran to Send Astronaut Robot, Human to Space

Mon Sep 11, 2017 6:6

TEHRAN (FNA)- Head of Iran's Aerospace Research Center Fathollah Ommi announced the country's plans to send an astronaut robot to space before sending a human being in the next 8 years.

"The project to send man to orbit should be implemented by 2025 and before that we will have a project to send human beings to suborbital Earth," Ommi said on Monday.

He also said that Iranian experts will likely send an astronaut robot along with a bio-capsule before a manned mission.

Commentary

The Soviet Union started by sending dogs into space and the US monkeys before risking a human astronaut. Only China sent a taikobot before the first human crew. Iran should do the same with a Surena class humanoid robot.

Otherwise the alternative seems quite cruel and Iran doesn't need to lower itself to the Western standards.

Iran to send human to space by 2025

News ID: 4084207 - Mon 11 September 2017 - 16:05

TEHRAN, Sep. 11 (MNA) – While announcing continued studies to send humans to space, the head of Iran’s Aerospace Research Institute (ARI) said they may try sending a robot or a live creature before the final stage of sending a human.

Regarding the project for sending a live creature to space which was halted, the head of ARI Fathollah Ommi stated “we have successfully launched a monkey to space, and now we are conducting research to send a man to space.”

“The preliminary measures to send a human to space are currently underway and the project is to be carried out in two suborbital and orbital phases” said Ommi, stressing that the project is in the study stage at the moment.

According to the head of ARI, the orbital phase of the project will be operational by 2025 and the suborbital phase will take place before that.

When asked whether they will send another live creature into space before a human, he said "it might happen." Since they intend to launch the live creature to different altitudes of space, several experiments must be conducted to test the selected trajectory for sending a human. It is required to launch the live creature at least 6 times, before they are ready to carry out this mission with a human onboard, he added.

“We might use a robot or another live creature prior to sending a human. If this mission is successful, we will launch a human to space after conducting the necessary tests.” Ommi stated.

Commentary

It took a total of 4 test flights before China sent an astronaut aboard the fifth Shenzhou spacecraft into space, in a span of four years, with an average single launch each years.

Therefore, with the average rate of one launch a year, that was used in the Kavoshgar suborbital program, the first Iranian astronaut could perform his first suborbital flight as earlier as 2023.

In the case of two flights a year as scheduled in 2011 (Kavoshgar-4 and Kavoshgar-5), the first astronaut could be sent by 2020.

Iran ready to join 2 intl. space projects

News ID: 4090799 - Mon 18 September 2017 - 16:31

TEHRAN, Sep. 18 (MNA) – Iran’s ICT Minister Azari Jahromi announced the country’s readiness to join two international space projects which include “optical space observation” and “Data Sharing Service Platform”.

Announcing Iran’s readiness to cooperate with Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization (APSCO) on space projects, Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi said “since the foundation of this international organization, Iran has been an active member of the organization and we plan to continue on the same path.”

“APSCO’s efforts to share information and train different groups in various countries is very valuable and has an influential role in scientific and educational undertakings of member countries,” he added, pointing to APSCO’s activities in sharing space information and data.

Jahromi stated that sharing information and exchanging services help reduce costs and increase the country’s awareness about its surroundings.

ICT Minister emphasized that Iran is ready to increase their space security and monitoring satellites and space bodies by joining the Asia-Pacific ground-based Satellite Observation System (APOSOS) project.

He also referred to Data Sharing Service Platform (DSSP) as the other project in which Iran will cooperate and said “this project is an advanced program which can help save financial resources and improve the quality of life during natural disasters like earthquake and flood which is particularly important for APSCO members as these countries are more prone such natural phenomena compared to the rest of the world.”

Minister: Iran Ready to Launch 3 New Satellites

Mon Sep 18, 2017 6:45

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's Communications and Information Technology Minister Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi announced that the country is prepared to send 3 new satellites into space which have been developed by academic centers.

"At present, three satellites, developed by universities, are ready for launch; we have had the necessary talks with the defense ministry and we will launch them as soon as they give us a green light," Azari Jahromi told reporters in Tehran on Monday.

He also said that Iran is willing to use home-made launchers to send the satellites into the space, although he ensured that the country has no limitations for utilizing foreign launchers.

In relevant remarks in July, Director of the Iranian Space Agency (ISA) Mohsen Bahrami announced the country's plans to send 2 other home-made satellites into orbit by the end of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2018).

"We expect to launch 2 satellites into space by the end of this year," Bahrami told reporters in the Central city of Kashan.

He said Iranian scientists are building three satellites, and added, "Payam and Amir Kabir satellites are among them and they will be ready for launch in less than one year and Zafar that is a satellite of the Iran University of Science and Technology will be ready for launch in 2 years."

Current North Korean Space Activities

e70d7d974648c87c5854bda0584e56c5_original.png

The current Five-Years development plan covers space activities for 2012 to 2016. (Choson Sinbo, 12 December 2012)

The Second Space Development Five-Year Plan starting in 2017, will see more advanced space developments. In April 8, 2012, the general manager of Sohae SLC declared that North Korea "will launch a geostationary satellite in the near future", and that North Korea "will launch manned spacecrafts". To this end, Sohae was also designed to support very large 400t-class rockets. (Choson Sinbo, April 10, 2012 Press Release )

Pure BS !

. .
I think after kim is done with his missile and nuclear programs he will start to allocate more resources to north koreas space program. I would not be surprised if a decade from now a north korean rover is on the moon.

Less than 12 months ago people were saying it would take NK until 2026 to develop a icbm....

@Galactic Penguin SST So KMS-5, KMS-6, KMS-7, KMS-8 and KMS-9 are cancelled? Unha-3 has finally begun to work why retire it?

The current Five-Years development plan covers space activities for 2012 to 2016. (Choson Sinbo, 12 December 2012)

The Second Space Development Five-Year Plan starting in 2017, will see more advanced space developments. In April 8, 2012, the general manager of Sohae SLC declared that North Korea "will launch a geostationary satellite in the near future", and that North Korea "will launch manned spacecrafts". To this end, Sohae was also designed to support very large 400t-class rockets. (Choson Sinbo, April 10, 2012 Press Release )

Nice coding but it is impossible man!

You always put laughing character at the end of your quote, makes me remember of Kim Jung un. Lovely guy!

.
I think after General Kim Jong Un is done with his missile and nuclear programs he will start to allocate more resources to north Korea's space program.

The Hwasong-13 ICBM first disclosed back in April 2012, and paraded each following years has never been test launched as of 2017, but unexpetedly, the surprise replacement Hwasong-12 IRBM and Hwasong-14 ICBM have emerged only this spring and by the summer are already being mass produced!
Therefore, space schedule can be very dynamic and unpredictable in its speed of change. See the Iranian Tolou, AutSat, Doosti, Mesbah satellites, etc.. all delayed, cancelled, or restarted as with the E1/E2 manned space capsule!

Kwanmyongsong SLV unofficially known as the Unha-4 (a name avoided because it brings bad luck in East Asian customs) must not be confused with the Unha-3, as its performance are much superior, both in thrust and accuracy!
Similar to the Chinese first SLV the Long March 1, an the north Korean first one, the Paektusan-1, it seems likely that the Kwangmyongsong SLV might be retired, as it has done its job perfectly well in paving the way to the development of the mainstay launcher family, starting with the 320 tons thrust launchers based on the 80 tons thrust Paektusan series engine, that will allow the DPRK to launch serious application satellites, and no longer experimental ones. Thus making the DPRK a full-fledged spacefaring superpower!

Nice coding but it is impossible man!

You always put laughing character at the end of your quote, makes me remember of Kim Jung un. Lovely guy!

The General Kim Jong Un, a Great Person of the Mt Paektu type, can perform any miracle, as demonstrated by the recent thermonuclear test, making the DPRK the only 6th nation in the world to have conducted such a nuclear test. The incoming atmospheric thermonuclear blast to be conducted in the Pacific Ocean is another demonstration of this tremendous legendary North Korean indommitable fighting spirit.
Under his wise guidance, and great patriotic devotion, very rare sens of strategy and stratagem, and unparalleled pluck, the single minded Korean nation will succeed, where other lesser nation can't even dream of!

North Korean lunar lander

The second phase of the NKLEP after orbiting.

Aug. 4, 2016

In an interview with The Associated Press, a senior official said that he hopes to see the North Korean flag on the moon within the next 10 years.

"our aerospace scientists will conquer space and definitely plant the flag of the DPRK on the moon," said Hyon Kwang Il, director of the scientific research department of North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration.

2016/09/26

The North Koreans will start designing lunar orbiter and lunar lander immediately after launching a GEO communication satellite as planned in the Second Space Development Five-Year Plan.
The development and completion of the Paektusan-1 rocket engine was an epoch-making event that advanced the moon exploration plan.
...
North Korea is racing to be in the next 10 years, the 7th nation in the world to land a probe on the moon, after the United States (1966), the Soviet Union (1966), Japan (1990), the European Space Agency (2006), India [Chandrayaan-1's Moon Impact Probe (MIP) crash-landed on the lunar surface on 14 November 2008] and China [On 1 March 2009, Chang'e 1 crashed onto the surface of the Moon].

North Korean lunar sample-return mission

Prerequisite paving the way for any manned moon landing, the third phase of the NKLEP after orbiting and landing would be to return rock samples to the Earth with a robotic probe.

  • Realizing surface sampling, drilling and sampling, and lunar sample packaging
  • Realizing take-off and ascending from the lunar surface
  • Realizing lunar orbit rendezvous docking and sample transfer
  • Realizing high-speed skip reentry return
  • Realizing high-accuracy orbit measurement and control

Already hinted back in 2015's Pyongyang Science-Technology Complex.

South Korean media confirming that the engine powering the Iranian Khorramshahr ballistic missile is of the same type as the North Korean Paektusan series that powers the Hwasong-12 IRBM and Hwasong-14 ICBM:

The Paektusan-1(B) rocket engine

since the thrust of Paektusan-1 is 784.5KN, if you build a rocket by attaching 4 rocket engines, you get total thrust of 3,138kN. The 3,138 kN is a tremendous force enough to bring large, heavy payloads of up to 6,000 kilograms into a low earth orbit.
...
It is noted that the burn time of the Chinese YF-20B is 128 seconds and the burn time of Russian RD-117 is 118 seconds, whereas the burn time of Paeksutsan-1 is 200 seconds. This indicates that the Paektusan-1 has a much longer burn time than the other two by comparison. It can be seen that the new type of satellite carrier rocket to be fitted with the Paektusan-1 is a satellite carrier rocket flying farther over the earth's orbit. It is predicted that the new satellite carrier rocket to be fitted with Paektusan-1 will send a satellite to a GEO of 35,786 km.

North Korea has spent nearly 20 years to develop this engine

2017.03.23

According to a North Korean 1999 rocket engine schematic, which was captured on July 22, the turbo pump, which compresses and distributes fuel, including one main engine and four auxiliary engines, is shown as in the test of March 18, 2017. This schematic was found on the North Korean cargo ship Kuwolsan, which was suspected of carrying missile parts in June 1999 and was detained in India.
Considering that North Korea had already obtained the design in the mid-90s, before the schematic was captured, it means that it took North Koreans at least 20 years to develop the engine.

By clustering four [Moksong] engines, the output may be unstable and the engine efficiency is low," thus "To overcome these shortcomings, North Korea developed the new [Paektusan-1] engine."

Thrust estimation of the Paektusan-1(B) rocket engine

2017/09/04

According to a March 20, 2017 report, Korean military experts analyzing the thrust of the new liquid rocket engine shown in the DPRK photographs, evaluated the liquid rocket engine as a 100-ton-force rocket engine.
The 100-ton-force is 980 kilo Newtons. The 80-ton-force liquid rocket engine appeared on the static ground test on September 19, 2016, and the 100-ton-force liquid rocket engine appeared on the static ground test conducted on March 18, 2017. As a result, it can be seen that, as of September 2017, the Paektusan liquid rocket engine series was developed as an 80 ton-force type in 2016 and a 100 ton-force type in 2017, respectively.

The Hwasong-12/14 ICBM seems to be a missile of the same class as the Hwasong-13 ICBM but with more advanced design, therefore the same thrust of about 100 tons, but with only one main engine and four verniers instead of two main engines and four verniers.

We can see that the Hwasong-12 after lift-off reveals one main engine and four auxiliary engines.
Previous informations about a 80 to 100 tons-force liquid propellant engine are now confirmed by this image.
The central main engine is in the 80-100-tf range.

I have no doubt that Iranians and North Koreans both shared the RD-250 technology they (one of them) stole from the Russians/Ukrainians. We have not seen it yet in Iran but there are enough indications, although somewhat less than the full R-27 engine by 2010.

Your asymmetric thrust analysis is wrong I'm afraid. They tested it on purpose on a very windy day with cross winds to show the capability of their fin-less dynamic-response TVC system. Try to get a high resolution video of the test and the windsock visible.
So the asymmetric thrust is caused by the off-set of the vernier motor to make the necessary course correction.

In case you are not just a Chinese or South Korean: This is not meant as disrespect for the HS-10 with its fin control system.
