The big mistake was transferring the space program to civilian control,as this allowed rouhani to gut it as a jcpoa freebee to his new western bffs.INDIA: A relatively poor country that has Patriotic leadership today launched her second moon landing mission

Good luck to them..Iran would have been not far behind if IR leadership did not deliberately destroy our civilian space program....Qajar kings will be happy to know they were not alone!
The biggest problem tho, apart from naive politicians [ie appeasers],was simply the limited rocket engine technology that iran had access to in the 00s to the early 10s.
Now personally I think that iran did incredibly well, under the circumstances that it was faced with, with its assorted hodge-podge of rodong engines, modified r27/ssn6 verniers and assorted various other stuff of unknown/uncertain origins.
However in the 13 years since the unveiling of the simorgh iran has made huge strides in both liquid and solid fuel rocket motor technology. The main thing now,in addition to coming up with a more modern replacement for the simorgh,is to increase both the number and the tempo of launches, not only to find the problems and come up with the solutions, but to also give the personnel in the space program the levels of experience that they badly need.
If the requisite political will is there then this can certainly be done.
Yes it was a real tragedy that all of the time and effort from the first attempt at a space program was allowed to dissipate because of the stupidity and political naivety of a certain politician, however theres no use crying over spilt milk. The best thing to do is to learn a lesson from it,and in this case its to make sure that you have two separate space programs, one a civilian program and the other a military one that the civilian government cant easily touch.
