Iranian authorities confiscated millions in aid for refugees in Shengal
by PDKI | on August 16, 2014 | in News | Like it

Civil society activists in a number of cities in Iranian Kurdistan have embarked on a campaign of fundraising for the refugees in Shengal (Sinjar). According to reports, the Iranian authorities have confiscated millions of aid for the refugees in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Following the occupation of Shengal and other cities in Iraqi Kurdistan by the Islamic State (IS) and the humanitarian crisis that followed, the people of Iranian Kurdistan have in various ways expressed their sympathy for the refugees. To this end, a number of civil society activists launched a fundraising campaign.

In the city of Saqez, activists opened a bank account and raised 15 million Iranian rial. Once the fundraising campaign became known to Iranian authorities in the city, they intervened and confiscated the funds.

Hussein Yosifi, one of the organizers of the campaign, told the Kurdish daily Sharpress that the Iranian government has confiscated the funds and intends to deliver the aid in its own name for propaganda purposes.

Another of the organizers of the campaign, who wished to remain anonymous for security reasons, told Sharpress that the Iranian government wants to prevent the Kurdish civil society activists from succeeding in this endeavor. The activists, he added, are known to be Kurdish patriots and the Iranian government is concerned about the political effects of their actions.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is concerned that through such actions, Kurds will show solidarity for each other cross state borders and in the process result in the strengthening of Kurdish patriotism.

Similar campaigns have been undertaken in other cities in Iranian Kurdistan. Given the Iranian regime’s fear of the political consequences of these campaigns, it is expected that Islamic regime will confiscate all form of aid from the Kurdish people in Iranian Kurdistan to the refugees in Iraqi Kurdistan.

The Iranian regime has also been alarmed by reports that the Peshmerga forces of the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan (PDKI) have participated in the defense of Iraqi Kurdistan against terrorist attacks by IS.

Obviously the regime is not going to look kindly on the activities of a separatist group, but if the confiscation of these funds raised by ordinary Kurds is true then shame on the authorities. Civil society activists from the rest of Iran and the Iranian diaspora should be doing similar things to show their solidarity with Kurds and Yezidis in Iraq.

It's ordinary people showing support to their own people across the borders. Read the article.

The pictures show Iranian Red Crescent society collecting aid for the kurdish refugees...no money was confiscated if it was legally done. An aid convoy has already been handed over to kurds in Iraq....the amount in the article is how much a part time taxi driver makes in Tehran in 2 weeks I don't think our government would need to confiscate this much to use it for its " propaganda" lol ...let your people finish the food we sent them, sleep in the tents we sent them, fire the bullets we gave them and our advisers and planes get back then bite the hand that fed you unthankful people and worry about kurdish patriotism ...all u have done so far is conducting terrorists attacks against Iran Turkey Syria and Iraq and then picking up a cloth and doing the kurdish dance !!!

What a piece of nonsense.

The government confiscates a very small amount of money ($500) to use it for propaganda purposes?

Some of these Kurdish-oriented 'news services' are so full of crap. I mean 500 dollars? Really?

Ironically, in the pictures shown, money is being collected by Iranian red crescent which is already owned by government for Kurdish refugees.

People who report such trash deserve how IS treats them, too unfortunate for ordinary people who are suffering.

Not much surprising from Iran. It seems that sanctions have emptied their bank accounts completely, and now they need to steal these little amounts of money, as well.

When İ read 15 million rial İ thought that this was a lot of money.
Turns put it's just something around € 100.

İ really doubt that İran is in need of that amount of money.

We are dealing wit these guys since three decades, how does it feel? :D

you don't get it, they confisctaed it all to send it in their own way, like it's a donation from the state. So it won't look like Kurds from Iran sent it to their countrymen but the government. They are afraid it would sort of bolster Kurdish patriotism and sympathy to one and other
