Depends on the occasion, which one is going to be used.\
IRGC has unknown number of Zolfiqar tanks, they were the first costumers of Karra too.

Maybe all of those T-72s are going to be upgraded to Karrar model.

Thank goodness you posted this picture, i might have had a heart attack otherwise. I feel much better now.:-)

Amir jan, we are so f***ed. Atleast we should have those M-60's upgraded!!!! Is our Army broke or something? I hate when my brothers are sitting in tin death cans. We have announcements of new stuff but I bet they only produce a handful. While in reality most of our ground forces are ancient and its very upsetting how its possible to fall so far since the revolution, without missiles we would be the weakest country in the region for sure.

The military spending spree has to come eventually. We can't keep on going with WW2 artillery, AKs, no body armour for most soldiers, old APC/IFVs, geriatric tanks, old helicopters... it has to come. They cannot escape it, only delay it.

So that's probably our entire modernish MBT force in 1 picture right there, and they're all T-72s. Still not great. About 400-500 T-72s remain in service.

I expect Iran to upgrade all of those to Karrar standard. Let us hope they will also produce a good number of new build Karrars after that.

As i said IRGC has released little information about it's tanks.

Yes they are T-72s

Only the Z-1 is rumoured to have been operated by regular forces (not got stuck at prototype stage like Z-2 and Z-3), and that is comparable to the M-60. We don't include it in the modernish tanks.

I don't expect us to ever be able to stand up against a real invasion from any modern country. Lets be realistic here, we cannot go head to head to anyone relatively modern.

You mean that Z-3 is not operational? How do you know that Amir?

I know that Artesh is not operating them but about IRGC, i'm not sure. They always have some secrets

We haven't seen it in anything but military parades and occasionally test footage, there aren't even any rumours that it has been inducted into active service. Simply put there is no evidence not even any rumours.

I think we can, but it not because we have modern tanks, artillery, etc. cause we don't.

Hopefully that will change soon.

:hitwall: Using un upgrade M-60's.. Holy crap our ground forces are in such dire shape. We have all these announcements and yet, we are meant to fight richer militaries with these. These pictures, embarrasses the nation, should be burned.

HEY! WE USE M-60s TOO! They aren't THAT bad. Even Israel has M-60s

.

Are the pictures from the Iran-Iraq war? Could have fooled me.

Just goes to show you how desperate need for modernization the Iran army is. Though to be fair, land invasion of Iran is highly unlikely so it's not like Iran needs 600 next gen tanks tommorrow it can be drawn out process.

Focus should be on developing modern APCs, IFVs, MRAP, advanced body armour for soldiers, advanced communication systems for armoured vehicles and soldiers.

If an english armored division rolls through semnan desert from afghanistan, do you think we can stop them from getting to Tehran, Qom, Isfahan and all the cities that are literally right there?

Zolfaqar MBT project was established by the Army(Artesh) to meet its demands for a modern MBT and had nothing to do with the IRGC. The Army never received funding to Put the Zolfaqar into mass production. The Karrar MBT was established by the Defense Industries Organization(DIO) that actually has Production line capacity and will eventually be adopted by both the Army and IRGC ground forces.

Saddam had the most well equipped military second to Iran in the Middle East at the time and he couldn't get passed Khommorshahr.

Iran's terrain is very difficult for a land invasion, you are talking about a force needed of 500,000-750,000 active soldiers. Enemy Armour would face constant threat from small mobile anti tank teams on all terrain bikes on top of Iranian armoured divisions.

Just a single armoured division? No air support? No troops? Good luck getting to Zahedan, let alone Tehran, with the difficult terrain and the thousands of ATGMs Iran has.
