Mohammad Reza Rahimi, Iran’s first vice president under former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined, state media said Wednesday.

Appointed by Ahmadinejad after a controversial election win in 2009, Rahimi is the most senior official from that era to have been convicted.

The Supreme Court’s verdict came after a long-running trial on what Iranian media said were corruption charges.

The official IRNA news agency said the ruling was final and Rahimi, 66, would serve five years and 91 days in jail and be fined 10 billion rials (about $364,000).

It did not state what his crimes were, but noted that a previous court had sentenced him to 15 years of prison.

Rahimi was also ordered to pay 28.5 billion rials as restitution, but the report did not say to whom.

Iran’s judiciary had previously said it could not reveal the details of Rahimi’s case because the verdict was not final, but IRNA again gave no specifics about his crimes, noting only that the sentence “should now be executed”.

Lawmakers had accused Rahimi of heading up an embezzlement scheme. He was questioned by judicial officials before being placed on bail in December 2013.

President Hassan Rouhani, Ahmadinejad’s successor, has warned in recent months that corruption poses a threat to Iran, and he has taken aim at powerful monopolies that control the economy.

The Islamic Republic is considered one of the world’s most corrupt places. It was ranked 136th out of 175 countries on Transparency International’s corruption index for 2014.

The main areas where graft thrives in Iran include the paying of bribes to facilitate trade in a country where state institutions such as the military exert control in businesses ranging from telecoms to oil sales.

The impact of international sanctions imposed on Iran over its disputed nuclear program is also blamed for corruption, with hard times making it more likely that government officials and company managers will take backhanders.

Since Rouhani’s government took office in August 2013, several prominent graft cases have come to light.

Rahimi’s conviction follows that of a businessman convicted in May 2014 of masterminding a $2.6 billion banking scam, the biggest fraud case in Iran’s history. He was hanged.

A former Iranian vice president has been sentenced to five years and three months in prison over corruption charges, a report says.

The Supreme Court also ordered Mohammad Reza Rahimi, the first vice president under former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, to pay a 10-billion-rial (around $369,000) fine, reported IRNA on Wednesday.

Rahimi was also ordered to restitute IRR 28.5 billion (more than $1 million) he had gained in unjust enrichment.

A court of first instance had initially handed down a 15-year prison sentence to Rahimi, but the Supreme Court commuted the term.

Rahimi has long been rejecting charges pressed against him.

Ahmadinejad's Former VP Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison
Mohammad Reza Rahimi, Iran's first vice president under Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, sentenced to five years in prison and fined over corruption.

Mohammad Reza Rahimi, Iran's first vice president under former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has been sentenced to five years in prison and fined, AFP reported Wednesday.

Appointed by Ahmadinejad after a controversial election win in 2009, Rahimi is the most senior official from that era to have been convicted.

President Hassan Rouhani, Ahmadinejad's successor, has warned in recent months that corruption poses a threat to Iran, and he has taken aim at powerful monopolies that control the economy.

In 2012, Rahimi alleged that the prevalence of narcotics and drug-addiction throughout the world is rooted in the Talmud.

“The book teaches them how to destroy non-Jews so as to protect an embryo in the womb of a Jewish mother,” Rahimi stated, adding that the “Zionists'” direct involvement in the prevalence of illicit drugs is why "you cannot find a single addict among the Zionists".

In another incident, Rahimi declared that Tehran will “break the grasping hands” of. President Barack Obama and would overcome U.S.-led sanctions against the country.

Mullah kids invented finger-cut machine. They should use it against their own friends and families who steal 1000 times more, why they use it only against ordinary people?

No, I'm saying they cut fingers of normal people, but when larijani or rahimi or other friends steal nothing happens.
Maybe the machine has a integrated friend or foe system...

other friends steal nothing happens..
what you mean nothing happens . soon he's going to pay visit in jail house

you are nothing more than lie** .
you talking BS here to do your propaganda .
show me evidence in past 10 years in Iran if they cut anybodies finger .
after the revolution in 1979 yes it did happen but not in past 10 years .
but you like to to do your propaganda

lol this is a circus brought to you by IR. The Soviets and North Koreans do the same stuff. Normal internal strife between the gang members and then they throw one of their own under the bus to show that there's justice in the dictatorship.

Maybe he should get his fingers chopped off and thrown into a hole and have stones thrown at him like you do with the average Iranian.

Ahmadi exposed Larijani gang, but why Rahimi got 5 years jail? why they are against transparency? ...
People have the right to know who is stealing their money, how, when, why, and how much. Journalists should be free to expose the thieves even if they are connected to the representative of God on earth!

Also this week:
PressTV-Jahangiri: Iran must recoup lost money

It's like a zoo. If you don't care about Iran, then ofcourse all of this is propaganda according to you. You can't solve a problem by hiding it for the public.

That is not possible since under Islamic laws which rule Iran, cutting is only for a thief that steals from a person (theft of personal property). The theft of public money does not carry this sentence (only jail time and fines). Basically it means if you are a bigger thief, your fingers are safe. Though there is another clause in this law for mofsd felarz. They could use it in such cases and hang the guy. But since this is a political case brought about to teach a lesson to Ahmadinejad and his buddies, no such thing will happen.

Interesting facts. So essentially it's even a bigger clusterfuck then we all thought. This whole IR seems like a very bad dream. How did Iran become like this? Even if somebody 40 years ago had a master plan to **** Iran in the *** like this, he couldn't have done it as well as IR has.

Actually this is not about Iran. This is as per Islam. Public and private wealth are considered different in Islam. Per Islam the private wealth is much more sacred than public wealth. By the way, Iran was this way always.

That would have been a stupid law, if it was so. But, in fact the public money belongs to all citizens, so from this point of view, there is no difference in the corresponding laws.
