Dubai: Iranian police shut down dozens of restaurants and coffee shops over the weekend, Iranian media reported, in a renewed crackdown on what the state sees as immoral and un-Islamic behaviour.

Regular officers and members of the "morality police" raided 87 cafes and restaurants in a single district of the capital Tehran on Saturday and arrested women for flouting the Islamic dress code, according to the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA).

"These places were shut for not following Islamic values, providing hookah to women, and lacking proper licenses," said Tehran police official Alireza Mehrabi, according to ISNA. Women are not allowed to smoke hookah, water pipes, in public.

Mehrabi said the raid came as part of a plan to provide "neighbourhood-oriented" security, and would continue in other parts of Tehran.

Coffee shop culture has flourished in Iran in recent years, offering wireless Internet, snacks, hot drinks, and a place to hang out for Iranian youth in a country where there are no bars or Western chain restaurants or cafes.

But that trend has been criticised by conservative Iranians who consider it a cultural imposition from the West and incompatible with Islamic values. The government periodically cracks down on behaviour it considers un-Islamic, including mingling between the sexes outside of marriage.

In 2007, Tehran police closed down 24 Internet cafes and other coffee shops in as many hours, detaining 23 people.

Iranians think what has it come down to that we have to live according to arabic morality and way of life. But it'll pass.

Most Iranians under the age of 30 (which comprises 65%+ of the demographics) are statistical muslims and even a level below non-practicing muslims. They just call themselves muslims whenever there is a national survey lol.

The mullahs will sit tight for now. On one side they have their supporters and on the other, the majority of Iranians aren't in the mood for no "Iran spring."

Don't blame Arabs for your misfortunes. First of all, this is not an un-Islamic behaviour but rather un-Iranian behavior, this is your Mullah's Islam and plz don't get us to it since we have nothing to do with it. Second of all, Arab countries are filled with world class coffee shops where both genders are allowed.

Yes but too bad the women have to have a man to be with her and to drive her to that "world class" coffee shop.

A sound post, Iranians should not look to blame this on anyone but their Government and their version of theology and practice; after all they are the policy makers in the country.

Also Iran can shut down coffee shops as it pleases it's their country and their internal affairs.

This is your culture and for the past century, our Islamic leaders were all opressed and hit on the head. Once they got to power, they couldn't handle it and decided to go full on arab, saudi style.

Most arab countries aren't even arab countries, but arabized countries. Saudis are real arabs.

Anyway, don't matter what you think. What matters is what most IRanians think, and most Iranians think this is arab culture FULL ON. Another reason the mullahs have to be so hardcore is because this sort of life is so foreign to us IRanians that if they let our own society to govern our way of life, we would start opening up night clubs and bars at every block. They know that they won't be here forever and they're trying hard to have their own way for as long as possible.

here's a website with an Iranain domain and registered inside Iran. Read the title the user gave to his article.
"غرض ورزی سیمای جمهوری عربی ایران با لحظه تحویل سال"

That's how we see them.

And where is this? in Egypt? in Jordan? Where? if it was in KSA alone, then why did you say Arabs?

Because Saudi are manifestation of Arabs on this earth. When we say Arabs we mainly refer to them and other Khaleejis. I don't have problems with north african or levant countries. Nor Iraq, these are all great countries.

. .
The Iranians and Saudis should be coming together on some thing like this its a problem you both share. Saudis have their Mutaween Iran has their Basij both sides are cursed with small men who like to harass the weak and molest women then claim what they are doing is Islam.

.
I hough you said saudi arabia represents all arabs? so now all of a sudden you are selling out your saudi brothers?

No, off course. Abii was blaming Arabs and I said Arabs have nothing to do with it. KSA is our country just like Jordan, and I would sell out myself before thinking of hurting it with even a rose.
