Iran says offers India bigger role in strategic port | Reuters

.
That could even translate to establishing an Indian naval base there!
That will be taking it too far.. Dont see Iran jeopardizing its relationship with Pakistan to such extent.
OrionHunter was just sharing his dream and wish. This port will only be used to boost economy or else any other use of this will bring a large conflict...

International relations are not black and white. During cold war era India had defence ties with USSR but US was the largest economic partner. I dont see any difficulty in balancing Iran and Israel as India's foreign policy is based on principles and pragmatism and goes without saying national interest.

I agree with you but then even if we deal in shades of grey, it's not necessary our partners will too. Our policies have to reflect and assuage Iran and Israels concern. As much as we would like to be friends with all, sometimes we don't get a choice and have to pick one or the other. Iran in a post sanction period would have a much stronger leverage and a upper hand in our relationship. Israel on the other hand we see getting diplomatically isolated. Now ofcourse the winds might change but as of now Iran is on ascendance.

How to manage a waxing Iran and waning Israel is the issue we have to address sooner or later.

Strategic relationship with Iran has been going on during sanctions period too now the lid will be opened up a bit

Hard to say if we strategic relationship with Iran during sanctions. I don't think so, it was pretty transactional now ofcourse depending on the policy of PMO the nature might change.

During the sanctions the agreement on Chabahar port and work started on it was not an easy task with US pressuring India even to stop importing oil from Iran

Yes. Sanctions had a huge effect on our relationship but still we did as much we could. If you take a cold hard look at the progress made on Chabahar and Gas fields during past few years, you would be disappointed. The feet dragging was done by India due to the limitations and constraints we faced internally in form of a corrupt, inept and short sighted govt and MEA and externally due to huge pressure from USA

There is no doubt that a naval base will be boon for us. But for that to happen, deep mistrust between Iran and Pakistan is a pre requisite. I therefore would prefer a strategic partnership with regular port calls by IN ships to Iranian ports. Lets see what future has in stores for us..

We have an airforce base in Tajikistan vying for one more..They didn't bother about their musalman or commie neighbors.

Not at all a difficult task for our diplomats. Israel provided support to India in 3 wars against Pakistan and yet our policy favours homeland for palestine. Iran provided the strategic depth and support to Pakistan in 1965 and 1971 and yet we have better relations with them. There is a saying in India that a wise enemy is better than a foolish friend. We know that we cant have 100% agreement in best of our relationships. What is required is space and respect for each other and thats what is reflected in our diplomatic approach.

Very well said. I agree with everything except the part about our diplomats. I don't want to wash the dirty laundry in Public but suffice to I don't have complementary feeling about them

Its not about individual diplomats but about our diplomatic institutions. We dont have any better feelings for our politicians but we do appreciate the way our country has been able to build democratic institutions.
