Iran Ready to Export Natural Gas to India: Official!

So Doctor to put it bluntly with the SAGE you guy's are "jumping from the frying pan into the fire" and given this just join in with the IPI. You can't get around Pakistan that easy.

Choice is yours !!!

IPI has to go through Baluchistan which has witnessed attacks on pipelines in recent years, we also have to pay you transit fee's and what happens when God forbid we have another 26/11 or Kargil episode? will it be business as usual?

yes in a ideal world of course land is better but this a long term strategic pipeline, if you were in our shoe's what would you do?

I can't see another option, India has a weakness in that we are land locked from Central Asia and yes Pakistan is our only option but... it comes at a heavy price! we might be held to ransom. If Russia and China get India and Pakistan to sign a security agreement with concrete binding conditions via the Shanghai corporation it might reassure some but I have my doubts.

Agreed. However do note the Murray Ridge and the need for SAGE to have compression station on the seamount which would require Pakistan's approval. Please refer to post #12 page 1.

So I guess your between a rock and a hard place. The Baloch coast is fine. A new road has been built along the entire Baloch coast upto the Iranian border which has pretty well secured the coast.

India made bad choices when it did not back the Military regime in Burma otherwise we could have had a pipeline with Burmese Gas as they have substantial reserves but instead that gas is going to China now!

The article quoted it may fall under Pakistan's domain, so there is a equal chance it may not? when will we find out whether it is indeed the case? that is the key question.

Baluchistan roads are one thing but pipelines are a target for militants and I have my doubts about it being full proof in safety as there are many groups operating from there including the Taliban who are no friends of India's.

No. The problem with Balochistan is simple law and order contrary to what common perception is. The population is extremely and I mean extremely thin on the ground. The entire population of Balochistan is about 7 million. Half of them are Pashtun. The Baloch only number about 4 million over a huge landmass. Even most of this population is found more in the north part of the province which is hundeds of miles away from the coast.

Strictly speaking the coastel region is Mekran and has significant Omani/Arab influence. The population in Mekran is tiny and with tiny fishing villages on the coast separated by huge enpy strips. Now with the coast road built the area has been secured because of police mobility along the strip.

Taliban are operating far away to the north and nowhere near the coast.

These projects are expensive and even worse are still subject to Pakistan's involvement at some level. This is by no means a done deal so don't count your chickens yet ...

However, that situation has changed after the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) extended Pakistan’s seabed territory by another 150 kms on March 19.

The extension of the continental shelf from 200 nautical miles to 350 nautical miles would give Islamabad special rights with regards to exploration and use of marine resources, including energy production in the area under its jurisdiction, also described as its EEZ.

India’s assessment is that Pakistan, which is not a beneficiary of the sub-sea pipeline, was unlikely to allow the pipeline to cross its exclusive economic zone as in 1995 when Islamabad blocked a proposed deep-sea pipeline from Oman to India because it crossed its exclusive economic zone.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, coastal nations are allowed economic control of the waters and seabed up to 200 nautical miles from their shores. They can further claim an extended shelf up to 350 nautical miles from the baseline of sea if they prove that the claimed area was a natural prolongation of their land.

The second problem that could crop up is that the SAGE project hinges on an offshore gas compression station on Qualhat Seamount (Murray Ridge), about 300km from the Omani coast. The seamount could now fall under Pakistan’s control and the station can be set up with Islamabad’s approval, said officials.

It specifically mentions : the pipeline would avoid Pakistan's underwater continental shelf and is "very much doable".

If Islamabad's approval is indeed required, it will be re-routed to avoid the approval.

Well that is debatable, having watched numerous documentaries including the al Jazeera one on the situation there many are concerned including human rights groups about the disappearance of people often blaming the Pakistani armed forces. Anyway that is off-topic but if I were a militant the IP pipeline would be a big coup for them to hit in my view as it's not just another pipeline

This article shows all the pipelines been attacked and in various locations according to the data, how hard can a night time attack on such a big pipeline such as IP be when we both know security forces can not patrol every inch of it.

Number of attack on Gas pipeline in Balochistan: 2005-2015

Also building a pipeline is one thing but what fee is being agreed with Iran will it be a fixed amount or variable? as I remember last time IPI negotiations were taking place and Iran was asking for a high price! it put India off the whole project as we have to pay added transit fee's on top.

.
@Dr Gupta Yes, I hear those reports as well. I also hear reports about Naxalites in India but I don't conclude from that India is too dangerous for anything.

Almost all of Pakistan gas at present comes from Sui fields in Balochistan. These fields have been feeding us since 1950s and are now almost exhausted. Sui is well to the north in Baloch tribal territory. Despite that ask members at PDF have they got gas every day? The only problem is demand now far exceeds supply which can lead to low pressure when everybody opens the taps.

Again I reiterate Sui gas fields are in middle of ground zero. Yet the gas is flowing of what remains anyway. In Pakistan the name "Sui" is almost another synonym for "gas".

Ps. Our idiot politicians don't help. What they did was gave open licences for vehicle LPG conversion so much so that almost 20% of cars turned to gas CNG Thisd made extra demand on the limited Sui and also some idiots built gas turbine electric generating stations again that led to system overload.

He just wants you to admit that India is paying heavy heavy very heavy price for bad relations with Pakistan and that now India will suffer forever.

Who is going to provide insurance also for the IPI pipeline? no American backed groups and not the ADB who are backing TAPI so who will insure it? Chinese backed organisations?

I agree if the IPI is being built via the coastal route it will be 'safer' but not full proof but there are issues of fee's for the gas + transit fee's, insurance and the main concern is if India might be held for ransom if war breaks out or situation escalates. All these issues are not resolved and until they are IPI is dead in the water in my book.

He just wants you to admit that India is paying heavy heavy very heavy price for bad relations with Pakistan and that now India will suffer forever.

In the end we both must come together there is no other solution but when and how is the question we do not know.

He doesn't even have a high school education. Guy thinks we have to pay al-bakistan for running a pipeline through the ocean. He then goes to make up some lie about needing a compression station in murray ridge. I'm sure he was conducted the feasibility all by himself too.

That's the only card the poor chaps have..pipeline and road..US, NATO purchased that card to get afghanistan, China has already purchased that card..now its time or sell the card to russia and India.

AFAIK your absolute control will only be limited within 12 nm like any other nation.
EEZ is just an exculsive zone, you cant stop ships and pipeline through that area @SpArK your opinion please.
