Iran Ready to Export 60,000 Tons of Fruits to Russia

The executive of Iran’s Trade Association said the Islamic Republic is prepared to export 60,000 tons of fruits to Russia upon Moscow’s approval.

“We have bought 60,000 tons of apples, kiwis, cucumbers and other produce, as well as about 10 million cans of fruit syrup, which are ready to ship to Russia as soon as we get a go-ahead from our Russian partners,” Sputnik quoted Hedayat Asghari as saying on Tuesday.

He added that the association is also ready to supply fish, eggs and meat to the Russian market to fully satisfy the Russian consumers’ demand for such produce.

Russia plans to replace Turkish foodstuffs with Iranian, Azerbaijani, and Abkhazian goods to avoid food shortages following Moscow's economic sanctions on Ankara.

The move by Kremlin came after Russian President Vladimir Putin approved a bill to impose economic sanctions on Turkey in the wake of the Turkish military’s November 24 shooting down of a Russian fighter jet near the Syrian border.

. . .
Where were these 60,000 tons of Iranian fruits exported before this announcement ? Either they will be diverted from the domestic consumption or from the exports to other foreign markets. The prices will increase in Iran. Nonetheless it is always prudent take advantage of opportunities.

Then Iranian fruits will be diverted to Russia from these markets and Turkey will move in to fill in the vacuum. Just readjustment of trade routes will take time.

Iran has excess fruit production. About 7 years ago if you went to the Caspian sea side provinces in Iran, you would see that the garden owners would simply beg you to buy their Oranges and Lemons. The solution back then was to turn it into concentrate. Then it was either used for fruit juice production or was exported to Persian Gulf states. Rani (SA's beverage company which is well known in the Persian Gulf area, started a beverage plant in Iran back in 2010 because of the abundance of fruits in Iran.

It is actually great, with bigger demand, production will even increase to higher volume.

Iran don't have that much of excess fruit specially if the year be dry and there be less rain than average . but what you told is true and the reason was the excess of middle men's they bought the fruits at fraction of what it cost from the villagers and sold them in cities as much as 20 time they paid for it and the result was what you described

Iran has very varied climate. So the short answer is yes. Except for the central deserts, most of the areas are suitable for farming and gardening. The big problem is of course the water. But there are projects to bring the Persian gulf water to the central area of Iran, desalinate it there and use the water for gardening especially pistachio. The salt will be sold in international market as sea salt has a lot of demand. I have even heard of extracting metals like Mg from it as well.
An expert that I know here was actually contacted by Iran government for this project.
