Iran ranks 18th in world in medical sciences despite sanctions - In 2000 Iran ranked 53 rd

The Islamic Republic of Iran has ranked 18th in terms of science production in medicine in the world, according to the latest statistics released by several international scientific centers.

Iran has garnered this high ranking from among 238 countries across the world, IRNA quoted the deputy manager of education at Iran’s Health Ministry Amir Mohsen Ziaei as saying.

In 2000, the Islamic Republic ranked 53rd in the world in terms of highly cited medical articles but improved to the 23rd rank in 2011.

Iran has taken wide strides in science and technology in recent years despite US sanctions.

Iran also ranked 20th in science production in the world in 2013, according to the recent statistics announced by Thomson Reuters.

Iran has allocated 1.57 % of the world science production since the beginning of 2013 that located the country in the released rank by Thomson Reuters.

Meanwhile, Iran has also ranked first in the region and eighth in the world in science production in the field of nanotechnology, the secretary of Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council (INIC) Saeed Sarkar had earlier announced.

Iran's 2009 growth rate in science and technology was highest globally being 11 times faster than the world's average rate.

"وَ قَالَ الطَّبْرِسِیُّ رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ وَ رَوَى أَبُو هُرَیْرَةَ أَنَّ نَاساً مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص قَالُوا یَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ مَنْ هَؤُلَاءِ الَّذِینَ ذَکَرَ اللَّهُ فِی کِتَابِهِ وَ کَانَ سَلْمَانُ إِلَى جَنْبِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ص فَضَرَبَ یَدَهُ عَلَى فَخِذِ سَلْمَانَ فَقَالَ هَذَا وَ قَوْمُهُ وَ الَّذِی نَفْسِی بِیَدِهِ لَوْ کَانَ الْإِیمَانُ مَنُوطاً بِالثُّرَیَّا لَتَنَاوَلَهُ رِجَالٌ مِنْ فَارِسَ".

Sometimes sanctions could act as blessing in disguise. Atleast it helped Iran in finding its own way & make progress on those fields!

One needs to realize that Medical Science does not come under the purview of UN or EU or US sanctions on Iran. The sanctions imposed on Iran are on nuclear technology, dual use (read military) technology, oil and finance. Medical Science and technology, OTOH, is free for all (meaning to qualified people/institutions), that has been and will always be the policy of countries around the world. That is NOT sanctioned. Why, Iranian students are freely accepted in US universities, arent they not?
Consider this, among 185 plus countries worldwide, how many actually have infrastructure and the means to carry out any sort of even rudimentary medical research? So the ranking, unless its in the top 10, means squat! So, IMHO, there's noting to gloat about this. Atleast the authorities in your country aren't hogging this freely available medical technology for their privileged use, unlike in some other countries.

Exactly.The only bad part of sanctions is economic pressure on people.I think sanctions somehow are like medicine,sec but fecund to build a country.
34 years pressure did not have major effect on Iran now we are one of 20 best economic countries.

Exactly my point. Countries which doesn't face any trade or technology barrier are made to get addicted to foreign imports... as it is easily available & affordable. That minimizes ones own ability to be inventive. Same thing can be said about India... If India has made progress on it's space, missile & nuclear technology, it's only due to the fact that these technologies eluded India in the past due to western sanctions. This gave incentive for Indian scientists to be inventive & make progress on those fields. Same thing is at work even in Iran.

Nope. Medical Technology is not sanctioned. Unless that is it includes equipment which deals nuclear medicine...which then falls under nuclear sanctions.
There is a comprehensive list of sanctions on Iran by US, EU and UNSC available online on credible websites, nowhere does it mention medical technology as being sanctioned. Also, US sanctions differ from EU and UN sanctions, not to mention that certain countries have ignored these sanctions and carried on trade relations with Iran. Plus, a decently good university like Univ of Tehran will have subscription access to most scientific publications and these are freely available to qualified people working there.
So how does this mean that medical tech is being sanctioned?
