The best naval assets for asymmetric warfare are submarines, specifically AIP conventional submarines that can lie dormant and noiseless on the sea floor.

Carriers are more for a show of force against weaker opponents.

Sitting still and quiet on the ocean floor never sunk no ships. If this is the task, then you can build a concrete 'submarine' and sink it at key points. No need for a complex bit of kit like a real submarine.

Why is it that other countries can have an AC but if Iran plans to build one and suddenly people are going crazy. If Iran has the capability and the desire to build an AC i say good on them. People made fun of Pakistan when it wanted to build an A-bomb, the rest is now history.

Does Iran need an AC? now thats a separate question. In my opinion ACs have lost their effectiveness that they once used to have. Now they are just a glorified sitting duck just like the massive battleships. a small missile boat can easily sink them or by a diesel submarine lurking in the depth, not to mention how expensive these ACs are to manage and operate.

I would laugh just as hard if e.g. Pakistan would be planning a carrier (considering the state of its navy, priorities and capabilities are and should be different)

This news might have been misconstrued. It might be just a plan that was told as a project they may work on larer possibly when Iran orders a number of jet fighters that can be modified for Aircraft carrier flight.

Or it could be a different sort of air craft carrier, helicopter, drones etc, etc...

Why in the hell would iran need an aircraft carrier?,that makes no sense militarily,not to mention that before that iran would need to build a modern destroyer which is something that the navy does badly need right now not an aircraft carrier perhaps 20+ years from now.

Thusfar, Iran has managed to build only surface combattants of less than 2000 tons full load, on the basis of reverse enginered and modified British design. A serious flat top (i.e. including hangar) would need to be at least 12000-14000 tons (see e.g. Thai navy HTMS Chakri Naruebet or Italian navy MMS Giuseppe Garibaldi and these ships are tailored for AV-8A Harrier and AV-8B Harrier II).

This here (the Algerian navy amphibious transport dock Kalaat Béni Abbès) is just under 9000 tons and has no hangar facilities whatsoever.

Besides, what would Iran use from a carrier? If only helicopters, then it is a helicopter carrier or LPH/LHD not an aircraft carrier. An aircraft carrier would need fighters able to defend the carrier group and to attack opponents. What suitable aircraft does Iran have, or can it acquire or produce?

Unfortunately, an aircraft carrier can move faster than a duck.

Iranian air force is almost non existent now . i think , first they should buy some decent aircrafts for their AF .as far s Aircraft carrier is concerned , i think it does not fit in naval docterine of iran just like Pakistan neither Iran possess sufficient technical and industrial capabilities to build a carrier battle group nor it is allowed to import such technologies and say crucial parts . So speaking technology and requirement wise , building an AC is not feasible now .

We want to produce fighters within Iran , if Russia agrees with TOT, that will be a great shift to our technological capabilities, if not, to hell. We will produce them with higher cost of cash and time.
It is easy to build an AC but as you said, capable fighters and fast attack helis are required. More importantly strong destroyers are needed with high capability of air defence and naval defence systems.
We have plans but a long way to go
