Pakistani Secretary of Petroleum and Natural Resources Abid Saeed says the Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project will be completed by the end of 2014.

According to the minister, up to 5,000 megawatts of electricity will be generated by the Iranian gas in order to relieve electricity shortages in Pakistan.

Pointing to the directive of the Pakistani Senate’s Petroleum Committee, the official said that power plants will be constructed en route the pipeline in Gwadar and other districts of Balochistan Province in the southwest of the country.

On March 11, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari inaugurated the final construction phase of the gas pipeline, which is to carry natural gas from Iran to its eastern neighbor.

The pipeline will see 21.5 million cubic meters (mcm) per day of Iranian natural gas exported to Pakistan.

The new Pakistani government has, on several occasions, stressed that it will pursue the gas pipeline project.

Last month, Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal reiterated that the new Pakistani government would continue the joint gas pipeline project with Iran, saying the issue of energy is Islamabad’s top priority.

“We will continue the work at the gas pipeline because such a vital project cannot be set aside in hard times like the present,” Iqbal said.

“Energy is our first, second and third top priority. Electricity is no longer a mere commodity now; it is a necessity and lifeline,” he added.

The joint multi-billion-dollar pipeline is designed to help Pakistan overcome its growing energy needs at a time when the country of over 180 million people is grappling with serious energy shortages.

So who will get the final contract after Tadbeer Energy was refused? Nothing will happen unless a final contract is awarded.

i heard a chiness company is interested, plus that company also wants to extend the pipeline to China...

They have been waiting for 2 years had they built the line , we would have gas to make electricity and no need for a loan

What kind of technological hurdle is here ...

Its a simple god given PIPELINE ... basic labor job we need to get financing from outside for this work ? :disagree:

Pakistan needs the backing of a very big and a very powerful country's backing and its interest in this project, if Pakistan wants to seriously complete this project.

So who will get the final contract after Tadbeer Energy was refused? Nothing will happen unless a final contract is awarded.

When? Why?

PML-N govt diverts IP pipeline funds to cover fiscal deficit – The Express Tribune

ISLAMABAD:

The PML-N government has seemingly put the Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project on the backburner by deciding to use the funds generated through the imposition of the Gas Infrastructure Development Cess (GIDC) to bridge the fiscal deficit.

The previous government had imposed the GIDC on gas consumers to generate the $1 billion needed to finance the construction of the IP gas pipeline, but the PML-N government is seeking discretionary powers from Parliament to raise gas prices through the cess, in order to bring them at par with prices of other alternate fuels.

@RiazHaq saab what are your views on this? @Argus Panoptes @niaz what do you people make of this? Trying to negotiate better rate with the Iranians?

This is only to be expected. We have no money to build our portion of the pipeline since the funds collected have already been spent as they were collected. This is only completing the paperwork formalities after the fact.

Well all provinces recently passed budget of multi billion dollars

The task involves BASIC laborers putting pipe lines together

Was it better to get the pipeline done URGENTLY with 100 Million from National Budet with Local Pakistani companies

Or Beg for IMF loan

If OUR takla was smart , in 5 months we would have completed the pipline had work been done day and night shifts

January 2014 we would be importing GAS from iran , and no need to beg IMF and no need to beg India ...

The bolded figures are all US Dollars -

KPK Province - 344 billion. Rupees - 3 Billion USD
Sindh Province - 617 Billion Rupees - 6 Billion USD
Punjab Province - 890 Billion Rupees - 8 Billion USD
Balouchistan Province- 200 Billion Rupees - 2 Billion USD

Military would get their share of 4-5 Billion USD dollars

So , 100 -200 million USD to complete the Iran Pakistan pipeline should have been easily possible

And that would allow us to solve ENERGY CRISIS for mere 100 million -150 Million dollars

No need to beg India
No need to beg IMF

Now due to the Loan we will end up paying $250-$300 Million Dollars each year to IMF
and that would cost us around 10 Billion dollars to repay , considering our curreny is getting devalued so our loan of 5 billion dollars would hike up to 10-15 billion as our currency is going down
