Without language it was impossible to preserve and transfer knowledge.

So if it is invention, it must top the list.

Good point. But maybe it can be broadened to communication. Humans were communicating well before language evolved (a main reason why we lost hair from our faces)....and we still communicate 90% or so without language in face to face situations.

A lot of them walk the slippery slope between invention and discovery the further back we go to the basics.

It gets fuzzy and merged to some degree.
