Not in 65. It was a threat towards Badaber and the U2 base after powers being shot down. The Soviets would have carpet bombed Pakistan and Uncle Sam would have done jack about it(nor wanted to do jack about it).

U-2 is a different story. You are allowing hostile aircraft to fly into Soviet territory. How could Soviets carpet bomb Pakistan without setting off a wider war ? Even saner elements in India would be concerned with direct massive military attack on Pakistan.

They could, we south asians tend to attach importance to ourselves in completely the wrong avenues..

For e.g , the worst thing to happen to the reigion is a war or resource draining conflict with Pakistan which leaves India weakened .. 40 -60 years later we will realize why.
