intelligence agencies in karachi involved in kidnapping for ransom

KARACHI: Some officers and an activist of the naval intelligence had formed a gang which was kidnapping traders and industrialists and receiving a huge ransom. The kidnapped persons used to be kept in the headquarters of naval intelligence, adjacent to the Chief Minister’s House.

The matter came to light when on August 26 a well-known fisheries trader, Javed, who had been returning from Boat Basin where he had gone to have his meal, was kidnapped and a ransom of Rs5 million was demanded. His life was spared after immediate payment of Rs2 million and some negotiations in which it was also agreed that he would be freed after a payment of another Rs3 million.

Subsequently, the members of Javed’s family boarded a taxi and arrived at the Nehr Khayyam in Clifton in pitch darkness where they found a motorcyclist who had covered his face and who had come to receive the ransom payment.

In the meantime, the SSP South, Nasir Aftab, who had been present in plainclothes along with the family of the kidnapped man, opened fire on the man who was going back after receiving the ransom money. A bullet hit him on his leg and he fell.

Nasir Aftab and some cops, who had been hiding in a bush, then grabbed the accused. He was taken to the Clifton police station in an injured condition, and during initial investigations made a shocking disclosure that he belonged to the naval intelligence and that two assistant directors of the naval intelligence, Ashfaq and another unknown, had been present at the venue where the accused had gone to receive ransom money, but they escaped from the venue when they heard the gunshot.

The SSP and a CPLC team contacted the high officials of naval intelligence and recovered the kidnapped person from the headquarters of the naval intelligence.SSP Nasir Aftab and CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy confirmed the arrest of the accused and the involvement of assistant directors in the gang, but they refused to divulge more information.

When the ISPR naval Commander Kamran was contacted he told this correspondent that he had no knowledge about the incident and that he would get back after gathering information, but he too failed to make any contact and several calls in this connection remained unanswered.
