After Allahabad And Faizabad, Aligarh In Line For A Name Change

A state government can change the name of any city or area within the state.

New Delhi:
After Allahabad, another prominent city in Uttar Pradesh may be staring at a name change. The Aligarh Municipal Corporation has unanimously passed a proposal to change the city's name to Harigarh. The proposal was presented by Mayor Prashant Singhal in a meeting yesterday and was supported by all councillors.
If the Uttar Pradesh government greenlights the proposal to rename Aligarh, it will add to the growing tally of places renamed in the BJP-ruled state. One of the most high-profile recent examples is the renaming of Allahabad to Prayagraj in January 2019.
"In a meeting yesterday, a proposal was presented to change the name of Aligarh to Harigarh. All councillors unanimously supported this. Now, this proposal will be sent to the administration. I hope that the administration will take cognizance of this and fulfill our demand to change the name of Aligarh to Harigarh...This demand has been being raised for a long time," Aligarh mayor Prashant Singhal said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

A state government can change the name of any city or area within the state. After a municipal body unanimously approves a proposed name change resolution, it will write to the state government. The resolution will then be sent by the state government to the Ministry of Home Affairs for approval. If the ministry and other relevant agencies approve the resolution, the state government can officially change the name.
A proposal to rename Aligarh to Harigarh was cleared by a zila panchayat meeting in 2021 and sent to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. In 2019, Chief Minister Adityanath indicated that his government will keep up with its spree of renaming places across the state.
"We did what we felt was good. We renamed Mughal Sarai as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhayay Nagar, Allahabad as Prayagraj and Faizabad district as Ayodhya district. Where there is a need, the government will take the steps required," Yogi Adityanath had said.
Following the name changes of Faizabad district and Allahabad, members of the ruling BJP have, over the years, demanded that other cities be renamed as well. An Agra lawmaker had proposed that Agra be renamed Agravan or Agarwal, while another suggested that Muzaffarnagar be renamed Laxmi Nagar.

Since coming to power in March 2017, the Yogi Adityanath government has renamed many projects and schemes, including the Purvanchal Expressway, which was initiated by the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) government.

The SP government named the ambulance service the Samajwadi Ambulance Swasthya Sewa. The Yogi Adityanath government renamed the service, removing the prefix "Samajwadi" and replacing it with "Mukhya Mantri" in the government's pension scheme.

Chalo yar, their country, their rules.
you're right but for some reason Aligarh hits different...
Education movement, Sir Syed Ahmad, first Muslim ran, Muslim owned University of South Asia, that whole history

Edit -
decided to do a deep dive

War of independence 1857 was not a singular event but a multitude of events spread out throughout south asia
Some people were fighting for restoration of Mughal empire (in the hindi heartland), some declared it jihad against the oppressors ( in Ludhiana, Sindh’s Hur movement), some felt disrespected by the British imperialism so it was a war of independence for local tribes (In Muree/potohar, Peshawar valley, Bar region of Panjab)

It wasn't a singular event but more or less these event coincided within a decade or two of each other and despite being so close to victory all these efforts failed eventually and British became even more dominant than they were before, thousands of ulema were executed, regular folks killed

In the backdrop of this traditionalist responded with going back to the roots, this started the section schism of Deoband and Bareilly but Muslim aristocracy of hindi heartland decided to change course and promoted western education to improve the status of muslims within this new imperial power they found themselves enslaved under

Sir Syed stated a college, later university in Aligarh, this movement later became associated with Aligarh IE Aligar movement, this movement reformed Urdu language to be less academic and more practical to make it easier for mainstream society, founded a scientific society of Aligarh (translation of major scientific work into urdu),British Indian Association (a political society), a lot of other cool stuff in the educational realm, forefather of Muslim League movement

Contrary to popular belief Aligarh movement was not all about Sir syed nor was it all in Aligarh
leaders of Aligarh movement
Raja_Mahmudabad_(center)_with_leaders_of_Aligarh_Movement_.jpg

Mohsin-ul-Mulk himself and his family at large were a big part of aligarh movement (from the Syed clan of Mughal "handlers" as Mughals emperors were controlled by them after Aurangzebs death)
Screenshot 2023-11-08 162213.png

Nawab Wiqar-ul-Mulk Kamboh (founding father of Muslim League, member Aligarh movement) with Sir Syed Ahmad (someone did the names for others influential people with their achievement, familial history too as they were a part of Aligarh movement but can't find it now)
idk how true this is but Kamboj of UP claim descent from the Mughal general Shabaz Khan Kamboh, so he is probably his descended

Point of providing this history was why they felt the way they felt, their history, history of their forefather and what the name "Aligarh" signifies
SO I do feel sad, I am not going to lie but their country their rule,
Although I hope Indian muslims do their best to preserve their history

Indian Muslims chose to adopt hindu identity. Let them clean out their past achievement. If they are happy who are we to complain?

Currently India is Hindu and intolerant towards Muslims - and therefore story of 1947 needs to be repeated and another (or several) countries need to be born out of India so minorities can continue to live and function as per their faiths.

Invoke Iqbal in India one more time.

Funny why we in Bangladesh kept 99% of our place names the same as always (Hindu).

Places like Sitakunda, Durgapur, Lakshmipur, Narayanganj, Keshavganj, Gopalpur, Gauripur, Madhavdi, Ishwardi, Parbatipur, Kaliganj, Mong(o)la... there are probably 70 out of 100 placenames in Bangladesh that are Hindu.

Just the difference and smallness/pettiness in mentality in Modi's India vs. our inclusive mentality in Bangladesh.

We are still naming our place names after Sanskrit and Pali names, Purbachal (Eastern Pathway) Expressway and Jolshiri (Cascading Waters) DOHS.

What would renaming a place do? Historical revisionism and brainwashing?

Can they erase Muslim history in India by changing place names?

Indian Pujari Idiots.

We are a small place with big-hearted people while India under Modi is the opposite.

India is a secular nation. Hindu is just a label.

India is hindu nation , those who think it is secular nation that is their problem .
India is already secular nation and continues to rapidly secularise.

Hinduism is nowhere but in words and some token displays here and there.
