INS Vikrant likely to be undocked by May-end:

India is working on two separate projects to ramp up sea-borne aircraft carriers capability.

The under construction indigenous 40,000 tonne INS Vikrant is slated to 'undock' from its building pontoon at Kochi next month, while India's biggest naval warship and aircraft carrier, the INS Vikramaditya, is under a minor 're-fit' to complete its Close-In Warfare System, a protection from incoming enemy missiles.

Second contract for delivery of MiG-29K/KUB carrier-based fighters to India will be implemented next year - News - Russian Aviation - RUAVIATION.COM

In 2016 Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RAC MiG) will implement the second contract for delivery of 29 carrier-based MiG-29K/KUB fighters to India. RAC MiG hopes that the Indian navy will continue purchasing the jets, Interfax-AVN reports.

“The contract for delivery of the carrier-based fighters will be implemented in 2016 (six jets of the type will be delivered to the customer in 2016),” RAC MiG CEO Sergey Korotkov said. According to him, a total of 12 more fighters should be delivered to India under the second contract. “This year we will deliver six jets and six more – in 2016,” he said.

Speaking of further procurement of Russian MiG-29K/KUB carrier-based fighters by India, Korotkov said: “Yes, we hope to continue our cooperation”.

According to foreign sources, India is going to establish a new military unit operating carrier-based fighters. “It makes no sense to operate two types of carrier-based aircraft in order to perform the same tasks. That is why we hope to sign a new contract for delivery of MiG-29K/KUB jets,” Korotkov explained.

It was reported earlier that the first contract for delivery of 16 multi-role carrier-based MiG-29K/KUB fighters to India was signed in January 2004, the second one (for delivery of 29 jets of the type) – in March 2010.

Its IN all over the news.... Scorpene, INS Vizag, INS Vikrant, INS Kochi, INS Arihant, new LPDs, P-75I but what Indian army is doing? Still buying tincans!!!!

The Capital-to-Revenue ratio is very different in the three armed forces. While the Indian Navy and the Air Force spend more than half their budgets on capital assets, the Indian Army spends less than 20% on average on capital. Worse still, earlier, the Capital-to-Revenue ratio in army expenses reduced from a 17:83 in the budget estimate to 11:89 in the actual expenditure, implying that higher than expected revenue expenses were eating away at the already sparse capital funding.

The Indian Army’s revenue expenses are increasing rapidly over the past few years. Since the sixth pay commission came into force around 2008-09, both salaries and pensions for army soldiers have become ballooning numbers for the exchequer. As a result, while budget estimates for capital expenses have flattened out, the actual expenditure on capital is actually declining rapidly in the army. What is particularly alarming is that the army’s capital expenditure is decreasing even in nominal terms – and is far worse once inflation is factored in.

And to make things worse - both the army and air force have developed some sort of a "love" for foreign maal - which thankfully the navy hasn't! The reason why though the Navy gets the least from the defence budget - but it modernizes the most of all the wings of the Indian armed forces. :enjoy:

The way the Indian Navy backs homegrown defence projects is indeed commendable - just look at the contrasting approach of the IN and IAF towards the LCA! :)
