Shaurya surfaces as India's underwater nuclear missile
Ajai Shukla / New Delhi February 17, 2010, 0:04 IST

The country’s top defence scientist has, for the first time, revealed that India’s new Shaurya missile, which can carry a one-tonne nuclear warhead over 750 kilometers, is specially designed to be fired from Indian submarines and could form the crucial third leg of India’s nuclear deterrent.

“I would say the Shaurya is a hybrid propulsion missile”, says Dr Saraswat. “Like a ballistic missile, it is powered by solid fuel. And, like a cruise missile, it can guide itself right up to the target.”

Making the Shaurya even more capable is its ability to manoeuvre, following a twisting path to the target that makes it very difficult to shoot it down. In contrast, a ballistic missile is predictable; its trajectory gives away its target and its path to it.

mate i am very much aware of that. i am not saying about what type of missile it is but there is no difference between Shaurya and Sagarika except one is for navy and other for the army. One is to be launched from submarine and another from TEL. The report from Ajai Shukla also says that Shourya is the missile that will arm Arihant.

Every K-15 launchers for Arihant will hold 3 Sagarika missiles.

K-15 launcher.....

Sagarika & Sourya TEL...... both are same..... the Shourya was developed as Sagarika but later the land version given the name Shaurya.

Got ur point kinetic.
may be i need to dig in further to get the complete picture.

Anyway.. Thanks for the clarification.

.
Shourya is a land-based hybrid missile with characteristic of ballistic but flight path of cruise missile as it never leaves atmosphere . It is derived from K15

While Sagarika was a pure submarine launched SLBM ballistic missile with all property of ballistic missile . Recently it was announced that underwater version of Shaurya has been tested and it might arm all future submarines .
So its like Sagarika has replaced by underwater K15/Shaurya , or they have redesigned sagarika to Shaurya like . It means same and output will be same . That is what confused many in press as well.

where did you got the info that Sagarika is a pure SLBM? It was all earlier media imagination. Its also revealed by the BR members went to Aero india that Sagarika is indeed Shaurya.

Shourya was tested many times before it was actually announced. It was labeled as Prithvi tests. All the future submarines will armed with Agni3-SL including Arhiant replacing current Sagarika/Shaurya. The K-15 canister that holds 3 Sagarika missiles will be replaced with single Agni-3SL MIRV.

The actual pic of Arihant from UPA-II brochure... lol Shiv Aroor sealed it as from livefist, funny....

See what i wrote - Sagarika was . There is a difference between is and was ,
Sagarika(K15) program has been taken over by Shaurya underwater version ..
Officially Sagarika program(Part of k15 Program) is dead and underwater Shuraya version has taken over from it , but people are calling Sagarika as = Shaurya which is totally wrong . Just bcoz shaurya has replaced it confusion has been created that Sagarika = Shaurya . Nope.

Here is the source - Read it completely and carefully
Broadsword: Shaurya surfaces as India’s underwater nuclear missile: New “hybrid” technology more advanced than China’s or Pakistan’s

Imp Part from above source -
India’s undersea deterrent has so far revolved around the K-15 ballistic missile, built with significant help from Russia. The K-15 was to equip the INS Arihant, India’s lone nuclear-powered submarine, which is being constructed in Visakhapatnam. But now, after rigorous underwater testing, the Shaurya could be the mainstay of Arihant’s arsenal.

“The Shaurya was developed from ground up as a submarine-capable missile”, confirms Dr Prahlada, the top DRDO scientist responsible for liaising with the military. “Every piece of technology for fitting it in a submarine is already in place.”

And this is what wiki says -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagarika_(missile)

Sagarika (Sanskrit: सागरिका, Sāgarikā "Oceanic") is a nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missile with a range of 700 kilometres (435 mi).The development of this missile (under the title Project K-15[5]) started in 1991. The Indian government first confirmed Sagarika's development seven years later (1998), when the then Defence Minister, George Fernandes, announced it during a press conference.[6]

And this old article - The Indian Express: National Network: Full story

Sources say that Sagarika will come in both versions — cruise and ballistic. It is, however, confirmed to be an advanced clone of the naval version of the Prithvi series. Prithvi-I is land-based, II is air-launched and III, sea launched. The difference is that Sagarika is designed exclusively for being launched from a submarine, hence is an SLBM (SLCM is a cruise missile.)

.
How can shaurya be derived from Sagarika, when both have different flight charactristics?....This has to be two different developements right?

Actually earlier, until K-15 images emerged it was imagined that Sagarika is SLBM version of Prithvi or others claiming it as a cruise missile. The doubts also confirmed by the visitors went to Defexpo/Aero India. I seems like first Sagarika was developed for ATV project while later the land version given the name Shourya.

India's first SLBM will be Agni-3SL as Sgarika is not a BM.

Look at the image (named as garika annexe).... its later modified as Shourya.
