Anyway I am quite surprised at the hostility that some of our Chinese friends display towards Indonesia and Indonesians. I was not aware of such a conflict/animosity/rivalry.

It's due to the anti-Chinese massacres/genocides that took place in Indonesia and Malaysia a few decades back.

Ethnic Chinese (not Chinese citizens mind you, but ethnic Chinese Indonesians and Malaysians) have long been scapegoats due to them owning a relatively large portion of the economic wealth in these places.

This has led to Chinese here being quite negative against them, but in the end, these Indonesians/Malaysians are discriminating against and persecuting their OWN citizens, who happen to be of ethnic Chinese descent. Which is frankly their own problem.

There is zero chance of Chinese military intervention in such cases, not to save foreign nationals. They would have to apply and be accepted for Chinese citizenship if they want protection from the Chinese government, and that protection would take place within China's own borders.

And China needs good relations with countries like Indonesia and Malaysia. So business will go on as usual.

I think the 2 years sentence is a pretty reasonable compromise that would prevent an outbreak of civil disorder while also not punishing the man too severely, for what was apparently not an act of blasphemy but rather a misunderstanding.
