The leaders of Malaysia and Indonesia have called for a special ASEAN meeting to discuss the political crisis in Myanmar. Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin is in Jakarta on Indonesian President Joko Widodo's invitation. He has called the coup "a step backwards" for Myanmar. Both leaders said the situation could affect the peace and stability in Southeast Asia.

Not much thing has changed in Myanmar. All along, the real boss of Myanmar is the army who pull string behind scene. Every leaders in Asean know that.

There will be an Asean meeting regardless linked with security, trade and confirming that the general fulfills the Asean criteria

I don't think it will pass. Other non-muslim countries will choose avoid interfering in their internal affairs, because it is not humanitarian nor effect them.

Why Malaysia is sticking head out for Myanmar? Absolutely busybody. In next 10 years, Malaysia will have Sarawak secession problem.

Political points for votes in the country. Attacking military leaders in Myanmar because of Rohingya.

Indonesia, Malaysia seeking ASEAN meeting on Myanmar after coup

JAKARTA (Reuters) - The leaders of Indonesia and Malaysia on Friday said they were seeking a special meeting of Southeast Asian nations to discuss the situation in Myanmar, where an elected government was overthrown in a coup this week.

Throwing a wedge in Myanmar’s transition to democracy, the military took power on Monday, alleging irregularities in a November election won in a landslide by the party of Aung San Suu Kyi.

After meeting visiting Malaysian Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, Indonesian President Joko Widodo said their foreign ministers had been asked to talk to Brunei, the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), to try to set up the special Myanmar meeting.

Muhyiddin referred to the coup as being “one step backward in the process of democracy in that country”.
Such meetings are rare and arranging one could be a challenge, however, given ASEAN’s policy of non-interference in its members’ domestic issues and their contrasting responses to the army takeover.

ASEAN, of which Myanmar is a member, earlier this week said it had been watching developments there closely.

Jokowi, as Indonesia’s president is known, and Muhyiddin also reiterated their commitment to eradicating “discrimination” against palm oil.

Jokowi said it was “optimal” for the two countries, which are the world’s top producers of palm oil, to work together to fight palm oil discrimination, while Muhyiddin said the anti-palm oil campaign in Europe misrepresented the industry.

Reuters reported last month that Indonesia and Malaysia were looking to hire an advocacy firm to counter the criticism.

Jokowi and Muhyiddin said they would discuss further an agreement for official and business travel between their countries amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Jokowi said the issue of Rohingya Muslims had been discussed. Indonesia has been historically sympathetic to the plight of the Rohingya, hundreds of whom have arrived there and in Malaysia in recent years after fleeing persecution in Myanmar.

Both leaders also stressed the importance of international law in the South China Sea and Muhyiddin called for self-restraint and to avoid militarization.

The US has no dog-fight in Asean and remember there is free trade market between Asean plus 5. 15 countries. Myanmar going into chaos means Asean members lose money. Things has to be normalized and flow in normalcy. Indonesia and other ASEAN countries including China want Myanmar to stay stabile to their own benefit because they are in the free market trade. This is Asean interest at heart. Indonesia and Malaysia don't want to see a big Asean market go to waste fearing this could cause bigger turmoil inside Burma. They want the new General to get on their page and ASEAN

It won't happen, Philipines, Cambodia, and Vietnam already said its their internal matter. That leaves, Thailand, Laos, and Singapore. Thailand and Laos are military government, why do they care? That leaves Singapore, Singapore unlikely to get involve as they are the financial capital of ASEAN, they have to be neutral, unless their investment are jeopardize in Myanmar, I don't see Singapore risking ties with Myanmar. Unless there is a humanitarian issue, not a political issue.

Nobody is risking ties with Myanmar. All the Asean members are on same page. continuing the same tradition as in trade and security mutual for Asean agreement. A state changed ruler overnight many countries have alot of investments in Myanmar there is slightly concern but once the General is on same page everything is good. Nobody really cares about the coup in all honest but everyone cares about their investments

Then you don't understand the formation of ASEAN. One of the key pillars of ASEAN is non-interference. ASEAN don't not share the same value as Arab League or EU. ASEAN didn't even got involve with Thailand Coup, and Cambodia eliminating opposition figures, why breaking non-interference now?

I don't think this is an interference but rather a selfish approach of securing their assets but if the general ignores mutual previous ASEAN understanding. There could be an interference and the member states will lose investments not good but this is just not realistic. The new leader is wise and diplomatic he already ethblished relations with many countries after taking over. I actully think Myanmar will enjoy long peace and properisity under his rule

Our prime minister is weak right now, he was almost coup by the coalition parties but saved when the monarch intervened. Maybe he sympathize with her.

From Thailand to Myanmar...

They seem to have a similar pattern.

Maybe it's part of their culture.

ASEAN should focus on the economy and development, to improve people living conditions together.

Not another idea.
