Indonesia announces surprise bid for 2032 Olympics

Asian Games Close: Indonesia Shows It's the 'Energy of Asia'

By The Associated Press

  • Sept. 2, 2018
JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia billed itself the "Energy of Asia" during the Asian Games, which closed Sunday in a ceremony emphasizing the country's diversity and the ties linking the 11,000 athletes who competed for 45 nations.

The opening ceremony two weeks ago was highly choreographed, but the athletes starred in most of the closing pomp as they sang and danced on the infield at the Bung Karno stadium during a persistent shower, the first rain in Jakarta for a month.

Sheikh Ahmad al-Fahad al-Sabah of Kuwait, the head of the Olympic Council of Asia, got rousing applause when he told the packed stadium: "Thank you Jakarta, thank you Palembang. You did it."

Indonesia, with 260 million people and the world's largest Muslim-majority country, agreed four years ago to hold the Asian Games after Vietnam backed out for financial reasons. It chose two host cities, Jakarta and Palembang.

China, Japan and South Korea topped the medal table — as usual — and host Indonesia had its best Asian Games finishing fourth.

A combined Koreas team stole some of the show, winning four medals over two weeks. Three were in dragon boat racing, and one of those was gold.

A combined Koreas women's ice hockey team also competed in the Winter Olympics six months ago in Pyeongchang, South Korea, but did not win a medal.

The other games show-stopper was Japanese swimmer Rikako Ikee, who won six gold medals and eight overall. She'll be among the most watched and promoted athletes as Japan prepares for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

The Asian Games showcased some new sports that will be in Tokyo — like sport climbing, skateboarding and karate — and many like bridge, paragliding and several local martial arts — that won't appear in the Olympics. One was the Indonesian martial art of pencak silat, where the home nation picked up 14 gold medals.

Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo, who starred in the opening ceremony two weeks ago, addressed the stadium crowd via a video link from the earthquake-struck island of Lombok.

He was surrounded on the stadium screen by islanders trying to rebuild their lives after a 7.0 quake hit last month.

Indonesia vice-president Jusuf Kalla assumed the president's protocol role with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach sitting among the dignitaries. President Widodo surprised the country on Saturday, saying it intended to bid for the 2032 Olympics.

The president is running for re-election early next year and talked up Jakarta as an Olympic host, despite some of the world's worst traffic and hot, humid weather.

Games traffic was bad with twisting rivers of motorbikes tangling with cars and trucks, but better than usual some said with local volunteers working tirelessly to get people around.

Asian Games: Sun Yang, Jordan Clarkson and other world-class athletes help Indonesia stage the best Games ever

The big names showed a genuine love for the two-week sporting gala, giving the Asian Games a massive credibility shot

Chinese swimmer Sun Yang showed on a number of occasions that he cared about the Asian Games. The first was when he insisted on repeating the medal ceremony for the men’s 200 metres freestyle after the flags suddenly collapsed to the floor while the China national anthem played.

Later that week, he responded to a call to swim in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay – a race not on his schedule – despite receiving treatment on a troublesome back until 2am the previous night.

And then there was his tearful embrace with a mainland reporter after he won the men’s 1,500m freestyle for his fourth individual gold medal in Jakarta.

Filipino-American Jordan Clarkson also showed he cared. The Cleveland Cavaliers star pleaded with the NBA to allow him to represent the Philippines at the Asian Games basketball competition.

He scored 20 plus points in each game he played in Jakarta and, during their defeat by South Korea in the quarter-finals, he showed his frustration several times as his side failed to make the most of their chances.

Chinese sprinter Su Bingtian cared. Tottenham Hotspur footballer Son Heung-min, of South Korea, cared. Japan’s badminton sensation Kento Momota, Singapore butterfly ace Joseph Schooling, Malaysia’s squash queen Nicol David, China women’s volleyball linchpin Zhu Ting and, of course, Hong Kong’s cycling star Sarah Lee Wai-sze – they all cared.

And it is because those big names – along with 10,000 athletes from nations and territories whose stories of sacrifice and tears we may never know – cared that the Asian Games was given a massive shot of credibility.

With hosts Indonesia putting on a world-class show – yes, there were some logistical and communication issues but nothing you will not find at any Olympics or major games – the Asian Games has truly emerged as the second greatest multisport event in the world. Not only in terms of number of participants but also in the quality of athletes and organisational ability.

The Asian Games needs its world-class stars to care and they all came out to play in numbers never seen before and helped strengthen the integrity and status of the Jakarta extravaganza.

From a sporting point of view, the Asian Games is a viable arena for the top stars from China, Japan and South Korea and other countries to test each other ahead of the Olympics that follow two years on.

For athletes such as Sun, the Jakarta Games was more than preparation for Tokyo 2020. He felt he had unfinished business, such as winning a first Asian Games 800m freestyle title – which he did while adding the 1,500m, 200m and 400m golds to his collection, giving him a career nine in total.

For Korea’s Son, it was about helping his team to gold so he could be exempted from compulsory two years service in the South Korea military.

Women’s squash individual gold medallist David wanted to prove she still had the ability to play at the top level after a decade of dominating the professional circuit like no other player had done before.

Each world-class athlete taking part in the Games had their own reasons for wanting to succeed. And if that wasn’t incentive enough, then the staggering and inspiring opening ceremony on August 18 that Jakarta put on would surely have strengthened their resolve and convinced them that they were about to perform in a special place.

The ceremony set the tone for the Games. From the giant, picture-perfect mountain and waterfall backdrop installed inside the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium to the dramatic entrance by Indonesian President Jokowi – via a Thai stuntman on a motorcycle – Jakarta raised the bar in how to open a major games. Tokyo and Hangzhou, in four years, will need to summon the world’s best creative and artistic minds if they want to beat Jakarta 2018.

Despite worries about air pollution, traffic and the fact that Indonesia only had three years to put the Games together, the two cities of Jakarta and Palembang can be proud of their work.

Before the Games, they called for volunteers. More than 50,000 applied and 30,000 were chosen. These are young men and women who sweated under a burning sun – there did not appear to be any rain during the two weeks – answered questions, gave directions, organised buses and ate out of cardboard boxes since long before the Games officially opened.

There were times when they did not know the answers, when they gave wrong information, but that happens at all the major events. These volunteers in Indonesia were among the best ever and have played a major role in the success of the Games.

All because they, like Sun Yang, Jordan Clarkson, Son Heung-min, Su Bingtian and their ilk, cared about the Asian Games. Thanks Jakarta, you would be a worthy Olympic candidate city.

Yup, it is ridiculous but only in rush hours. Today, Jakarta governor tries to minimize the traffic by limiting people to use cars and improve public transportation.

Indonesia submits bid to host 2032 Olympics
Tuesday, 19 February 2019

After garnering praise for hosting last year's Asian Games, Indonesia has decided to throw its hat into the Olympic ring. If chosen, it could face competition from India and a joint bid by North and South Korea.

Indonesia has officially apply to host the 2032 Olympics. On Sunday, the Indonesian Ambassador in Bern, Swiis, Muliaman D. Hadad handed over a letter from President Joko Widodo to Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), in Lausanne, Switzerland.

A copy of the letter was received by Thomas and he responded positively, especially after Indonesia's success during the Asian Games and Asian Paragames 2018.

President Joko Widodo had verbally conveyed his wish for Indonesia to host the Olympic Games when Thomas Bach visited in 2018, to which the IOC responded well.

"The IOC recognizes Indonesia's capability during the successful implementation of the 2018 Asian Games and Asian Paragames. We feel this is a strong foundation," said Christophe Dubi, executive director of IOC.

The Indonesian Ambassador in Bern said that Indonesia's run as a candidate to host the 2032 Olympics is also a good opportunity to showcase the nation's economic capabilities, especially as the world's 4th largest population and member of the G-20.

The election process of the 2032 Olympics host will be held by no later than 2024. Tokyo, Paris and Los Angeles will be the hosts for the Olympic Games in 2020, 2024 and 2028 respectively.

We can do that, our economy is quite big to sustain such spending

Indonesia is building biggest football stadium in Jakarta with 82.000 seats. If Olympic games is to be held in Jakarta-Palembang just like in Asian Games 2018 case, so this stadium will be important for big football play like Semifinals and Final game. Very important also to win the bid.

Expected to finish in 2021.

Committee seeks Indonesian government support in 2032 Olympics bid

Indonesia’s National Olympic Committee (NOC) has requested the government's full support as it strives to vie against several other countries to win the bid to host the 2032 Olympic Games.

NOC Indonesia president Raja Sapta Oktohari said he was optimistic that the country had a real shot at hosting the international sporting event, regardless of the competition.

Australia, India, Unified Korea, China and Germany have previously joined the bidding process, he said.

“Qatar wrote to the IOC [International Olympic Committee] stating its intention to join the bidding process last week,” Raja said in a written statement issued on Wednesday.

“More countries have conveyed their seriousness to host the 2032 Olympics, so should we.”

If all goes according to plan, Indonesia could fulfill its dream of becoming the first Southeast Asian country to host the prestigious event, he said.

“The NOC needs major support from the government. All this time, we have yet to take significant steps to realize [our ambition] to host the event,” Raja added.

He went on to say that the NOC had previously gained support from news agencies and state-owned enterprises.

The hosting opportunity would help boost Indonesia’s reputation in the international community, while also positively changing the global perception of the archipelago, Raja said.

“We have to convince the world that our success in hosting the 2018 Asian Games and Asian Para Games is proof of Indonesia’s ability to host [the Olympics],” he added.

The NOC previously said the country had no city aside from Jakarta for its planned proposal to host the 2032 Olympics, ending recent speculation about possible plans to propose the country’s future capital in East Kalimantan as the host city.

The only way to win is to use Muslim card. Olympic games will also be pushed back due to Covid 19. Tokyo Olympic will likely be held in the middle of 2021, thus 2032 Olympic will likely become 2033 Olympic. The hardest competitor IMO is from German and Australia, as China has already hosted the game in 2008, while India need to prove more by hosting the next Asian Games to get more support.

Jakarta infrastructure will likely become much better in 2033 as MRT Jakarta and LRT Jakarta phase 2 will likely have been completed before the game starts. BRT system and Jakarta Commuter line will likely become much better as well at that year.

Basketball new stadium for 2023 FIBA world cup in Jakarta will be the only main sport complex that still need to be constructed as representative place to hold basketball games in Olympic. Pretty much other sport facility have been ready after Asian Games 2018 event, Jakarta International stadium construction will also likely be completed in 2021. Jakarta I believe will host the game together with Palembang, just like Asian Games 2018.

The main reason to host Olympic games is merely about getting world status IMO. It will only be logical to pursue if only Indonesia economy still can grow quite fast until 2024 where it is the time to decide which country who will become the winner. The selection committee of course will assess Indonesia likelihood to sustain its economic growth until 2033 as it will be the parameter to see whether Indonesia is financially capable to handle the game.

After the disaster that was Brazil 2016, you're not gonna get this. I think Turkey also lost the bid for this reason.

I dont think Brazil 2016 is a disaster. The game was held smoothly there. And Jakarta and Palembang have already got good infrastructure to host Olympic game. What we need to do more is to build another athlete housing in Palembang, building 1 representative football and basketball stadium. That football stadium has already been built in Jakarta and for basketball we are going to build the big one as we will host FIBA world cup in 2023.

Pretty much we dont need much money to build new sport complex and just need to focus on building basic infrastructure in both Jakarta and Palembang for transportation and others, which is part of city development and whether there is an Olympic game or not, we still need to spend money to build it.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has instructed his Cabinet members to prepare a road map for the country's bid to host the 2032 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games as Indonesia is set to compete with other countries in the bidding process. In a limited Cabinet meeting on Tuesday,

Jokowi asked for the plan to be prepared thoroughly since the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is expected to start the host selection process as late as 2023. “I want to bring to mind that the 2018 Asian Games and Para Games have been successfully held [in Indonesia].

It brings a sense of confidence and is an eye-opener for the world that Indonesia is a good host for international events,” Jokowi said during the opening of the meeting. The bid to host the Olympic Games was an effort to improve the country's image and dignity, Jokowi said, adding that the government should use the plan to improve, among other things, preparation of sports infrastructure, athlete’s achievement and to increase global visibility for the organizing city.

Another stadium is being built in Banten, a province just next to Jakarta. Together with Jakarta International Stadium that is also being built in North Jakarta, this new stadium is important for Indonesia to win Olympic bid as Jakarta will likely to be a proposed host together with Palembang in Sumatra.

As like Asian Games 2018, football games will likely be held in stadium around Jakarta and there will be 2 competition as well, for men and for women. While GBK stadium in South Jakarta will be used for athletic games, just like what happen in previous Asian Games 2018.

New football stadium being built in Banten province.

Indonesia also still have another good football stadiums across Java and Bali islands in case we want to use them for Olympic as well.

These are 6 stadiums used for FIFA World Cup 2021 U 20

Indonesia announces surprise bid for 2032 Olympics

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia will bid to host the 2032 Olympics following the success of the Asian Games held there over the past two weeks, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo said in a surprise announcement Saturday that highlights the rising ambition of the giant but long underperforming Southeast Asian nation.

Jokowi, who is campaigning for a second term, made the announcement at a meeting in Bogor with the presidents of the International Olympic Committee and the Asian Olympic Committee.

“With the experience we have in organizing the 18th Asian Games, we are sure Indonesia can also host a bigger event,” Jokowi said in a statement after the meeting.

IOC President Thomas Bach welcomed the candidacy of Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous nation, saying that the Asian Games provided a “strong foundation” for the country bid.

He said Indonesia has shown that it has all the ingredients to hold the Olympics successfully.

“You see that Indonesia is on the move. And you see the enthusiasm of the people,” Bach told The Associated Press. “It’s a very young country. This of course also makes it very interesting for the IOC.”

About 12,000 athletes from 45 nations and territories as well as several thousand officials and journalists took part in the Asian Games, which end Saturday. As host, Indonesia provided a spectacular opening ceremony and also exceeded its own expectations in winning 30 golds, placing fourth on the medal table.

Indonesia, projected to be among the world’s 10 biggest economies by 2030, used the games to shift perceptions that it’s in the “too hard” basket, paving the way for a tilt at even bigger sports hosting baubles.

The country’s hosting of the Asian Games without major organizational hitches has been a boost for Jokowi as he heads to elections in April. With the 2032 bid announcement, he gets to extend the shelf life of the Asian Games afterglow.

Bach said the formal selection process for 2032 hasn’t begun but Germany and India have also expressed interest.

“And we have heard from other continents and other cities,” he said. “Given that the decision will most likely be taken in 2025, you can understand that we are already very happy at this stage to have such an interest.”

Tokyo is hosting the 2020 Olympics. Paris and Los Angeles have already been selected to host the following two games, in 2024 and 2028, respectively.

Massive problems with the 2016 Olympics in Brazil, a developing country with endemic corruption, may count against Indonesia’s chances. It cost Brazil about $20 billion to host the Olympics, a bill that is likely to raise objections in Indonesia, where poverty remains widespread.
