India's War Budget World's 3rd Biggest Despite High Poverty

Basic infrastructure? Roads in Lahore and Islamabad are wider and better than any Indian city . Meanwhile next year orange line will be completed in Lahore on top already having BRT .

Not going to compare Islamabad because you dont have a city that compares well with how well planned , clean and green it is . Ask anyone worldwide which is the dirtiest country in the world and they will only tell you one name .

Going into stats game is fruitless because have done that to death with alot of Indian posters .
Thats it....a few drone shots of flyovers, bus transit system and underpasses! what purpose did this video fulfil?

since were playing this game....here is gurugram (previously gurgaon) for you

True, because you cannot discount the buying power of currencies, the strength of the dollar is a pillar of America's economic power. That's why nominal GDP matters more.

Maybe on the day when you can buy 1 USD for 1 Rupee that might change. Interesting fact, the original conversion rate was actually 1:1 when the Rupee was created.

Purchasing Power is applicable for buying goods and services from within the country, anything coming from outside is determined by nominal value of currency. Also, PPP tends to determine services more than goods because usually services are 'created' and sold locally. Meaning my doctor in India charges me INR 200 or USD 3 for a simple consultation while this is impossible in USA.

That said, world bank data for poverty is usually in PPP dollars when defining poverty line.

In 2016, India surpassed Saudi Arabia and Russia to claim the 4th spot among the top five defense spenders globally for the first time, according to Jane's Defense. India, a country with 33% of the world's poor, is projected to surpass the United Kingdom to rise to the 3rd spot for defense spending by 2018.

Sources: FT/IHS Jane's (Defense Budgets) and World Bank (Poverty)

India's military spending has grown rapidly from $38.17 billion in 2010 to $50.7 billion in 2016. It is projected to rise further to $56.5 billion in 2018 and $64.07 billion in 2020, according to Jane's. For comparison, India's south Asian neighbor Pakistan's defense budget for 2016 is only $8 billion.

India's rapid rise to the list of world's top defense spenders stands in sharp contrast to the reality that it remains home to the world's largest population of poor, hungry and illiterate citizens. India also leads the world for lack of hygiene, disease burdens and open defecation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rule has seen dramatic growth of wealth inequality in India. Top 1% of Indians now own 58.4% of India's wealth, up from 49% in 2014 when Mr. Modi was elected Prime Minister, according to Credit Suisse Global Wealth Report 2016.

Median wealth data compiled by Credit Suisse for 2016 shows that average Pakistani adult is 20% richer than an average Indian adult and the median wealth of a Pakistani adult is 120% higher than that of his or her Indian counterpart, according to Credit Suisse Wealth Report 2016. Average household wealth in Pakistan has grown 2.1% while it has declined 0.8% in India since the end of last year.

CS Wealth Report 2016 indicates that 50% of Pakistanis own more than $1,180 per adult which is 120% more than the $608 per adult owned by 50% of Indians.

The Credit-Suisse report says that the richest 1% of Indians own 58.4% of India's wealth, second only to Russia's at 74.5%. That makes India the 2nd biggest oligarchy in the world.

The CS wealth data, particularly the median wealth figures, clearly show that Pakistan has much lower levels of inequality than India.

Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI)'s MPI, multi-dimensional poverty index, brings together 10 indicators, with equal weighting for education, health and living standards. In South Asia region, Afghanistan has the highest level of destitution at 38%, according to OPHI's MPI index. This is followed by India at 28.5%. Bangladesh (17.2%) and Pakistan (20.7%) have much lower levels.

Rapid growth in India's defense expenditures conveys Prime Minister Modi's priorities. It seems that he believes the way for India to achieve great power status is through building a massive military regardless of the deep deprivations of the Indian people.

Mr. Modi's massive military buildup poses a serious threat to its neighbors, particularly Pakistan, a much smaller country which was invaded and split in two by the Indian military in 1971. The Indian invasion resulted in the creation of Bangladesh.

So rise in defense budget at a rate of less than 5% in last 6 years is a rapid rise in defense budget? This is amazing.

Where do you get these numbers? 33% :cheesy: According to World bank and government of India only 21% of the total population live below poverty line. That too a 2011 data. So poverty has increasedo_O? BS:lol:

Talking about defense spending, we have two threats from Pakistan and China. There is no point in concentrating on poverty eradication when there is no country to be saved.

India spend about 1 Lakh crore rupees on Fertilizer subsidy alone.

That data was with old valuation of PPP. Actual figure of poverty as per World Bank is about 99 million poor which amounts to 8% of global poverty.

If Mumbai had a GDP that size then the GDP per capita of the rest of India is about $1,400 (less than Pakistan).

What is pakistan per capita minus Karachi?

Poverty in south asia as per world bank.

India had 98.9 million poors in 2011 as per 1.25 USD criterion which is 8% of population and decline of 75% in poverty in 6 years. This is 2016 and by eny extrapolation technique, it will not be more than 5%.

It's Always fun to see people from two of lowest ranked countries arguing with each other over whose worse. The fact remains that both India and Pakistan have huge amounts of poor hungry people , who need help but if you go with the recent past and the current outlook it's India who seems to have a better future and plan to deal with that

Ever heard of Amritsar? anyway, highway length per capita of Pakistan is only a fraction of India's.
BRT now? I don't think Metro and BRT is anything new for Indian cities. India has dozens, even monorails, soon metrino and tracks are being tested for bullet trains.
You can use PPP per capita as an indication of living standard. How is India by that measurement?
Ranked at 123 with around $6600.

Wiki seriously ? Couldnt you have taken your figures from a reliable source ? I can go and make Afghanistans economy $500 billion in wiki . Entire Maharstra's economy is $289 billion .

There are alot of them where you are behind .
Again, I can go for census issue, of nearly 40% population of Pak, so end of the story.

Over that, again India had half of Pakistani GDP per capita, lower HDI, literacy or anything against Pakistan few decades ago. We made the most ahead, will be the same with rest too.

Pakistan was a prosporus Indian land with multiple river flowing in the area and full prosperity and unique co existance of Hindus, Muslims and shikhs with a great fusion of Hindusim and Islam. Pakistan was at a stage from where they were positioned to be a great nation. But you can see what it is now.

India is no doubt one of the biggest democracy in the world; because it has the highest population, Simple! (China highly populist, and officially “communist”). India is the second biggest nation in the world in terms of population and seventh largest in terms of area. According to the IMF as of 2015, the Indian economically nominally worth US$ 2.182 trillion, it, it’s the eleventh largest economy in terms of market exchange rates at US$ 8.027 trillion, third largest by PPP, with an annual GDP growth of last decade’s 5.8%.[1]
My special thanks to Mr. @RiazHaq to quote an oversmart guy who uses 1-2 years old GDP per capita stats of India plus 2-3 years away in future (projected) of our African fellows.
This masterpiece is going to be a good read for our Nigerian and Ghanaian friends on Indian Forums. Regards.

Problem with only one side.
Someone feels that India is disturbing the "balance of power" in "South Asia" (as if there was any :D, you can't balance a country with 3/4th of economic output, 85-90% technical output and so military of your region. Sooner Pakistanis realize, better for them.) and starts taunting Indians over poverty like pot calling the cattle black; without the stats (for India only cuz they change too fast, they even have try to be oversmart and put "projections" as if we can't catch), without checking out the track record of social progress in last 25 years!

They got more fertile land, higher density of natural resources, already 92% higher GDP per capita (nearly double) with freedom, 30% of land against finalized 30% and much more. Look, where they stand now? Struggling to compare with a country, India which used to look like fourth world country in 70s.
Since 90s, India's income growth has ranged from 1.5 to 3 times of Pak every year. India is further far more innovative nation (taking population into account) from USTPO to WIP.
Enough to justify a Democratic system over an Islamic republic ruled by army. Now, they'll quote me to call the Democracy fake and "Hindu terrorists" (a special kind of terrorists who neither hijack planes nor suicide bomb, still everything pointing out against them is terrorism). Will call about abolished inactive female fortification or Sati but won't even let actually going honour killings come in discussion.:(

Yes some good people will accept the facts but typical islamist will mock Ignoring the facts that their total national revenue is 40% lesser that one indian public sector company Hindustan petrolium and one indian company has greated market capitalization than whole karchi stock exchange and one indian city Bombay has more GDP than whole Pakistan.

3% poverty in Pakistan vs 33% poverty in India.
8 Billions vs 58 Billions of defense budget.

Who's denying its countrymen more?
Hehehehehehehe.... I'm not even going to bother pointing out your folly. Please learn how to read a graph/chart.
