adjusted for cost of living. as it should be for any country. I'm not sure how a generic fixed poverty line numbers work - for from country to country given the vast swings in cost of living.

nyways on a serious note thts good tht poverty level in india is getting down the biggest problem for the whole world is to feed millions of hungry indians the biggest problem for humanity & even more severe thn Africa, & instead of increasing defence budget & becoming the biggest arms importer in the world GoI should divert more resources on poors.

North Easterners MUST step forward and throw these illegal immigrants, Make life a living hell for them so that they go back to the hole they crawled out from. They are seriously hampering our growth and figures pertaining to illiteracy and poverty. Please just band together and shoot the MF's. Don't expect these politicians to do anything because of votes, do it yourself. I think the whole of India must take this seriously and raise a campaign and awareness program about this, and should reward all Indians living in the NE who helps in catching these migrants or informs the authorities.

True, it was absolutely not required to compare this was Pakistan in any respect..!!
You have a valid point..!!

Also, our expenditure on defence is less on % basis points of GDP as compared to Pakistan for what its worth.. India is a huge country and to defend it, spending money on the armed forces is an absolute necessity.. Poverty or no poverty it has to be done, no matter what...!! Govt is doing what it can for the poor and the hungry; and still a lot more needs to be done... But there are limits to everything... Defence cannot be compromised under any circumstances..

Also I believe levels of poverty increasing in NE has a lot(almost 100%) to do with the Olympic Gold medalist pole vaulters..!!
The first thing these people should see after pole vaulting must be a barrel of loaded INSAS..!!

Even according to the world bank poverty line of 1.25 $ PPP per person per day , India's poverty has declined from 41.6% in 2005 to 32.7 % in 2008 according to the WB's latest numbers .

We did try in the past, Assam agitation, nellie massacre, and more recently sms campaign to not to give work to ilegel migrants, trashing them up on streetsand most recently pressuring police to catch them in train stations , but every time it is the central govt and state govts minority appeasement policies that come in our way(here "minority" is pertaining to ethinicity, not religion and excluding Indians from other states).The need of the time is strong policies to identify them and send them back to their wetlands.
Identification is big problem because "assamese" is not one homogenous group but , can be considered as mini India in itself, although we can identify migrants just by their look and their behaviuor but to legally prove them is difficult and would be a lenghty process and would require massive financial and man power resources,which we don`t have.

Yet oragnistaions like AASU is carrying out the work whatever it can in its capacity. A little help from govt instituitions which issues ration cards , bpl cards and other identification documents will greatly help(there corruption has no ceiling) and also recognition by central govt of the issue as a threat will go a long distance to solve the problem , otherwise not much can be done.

first of all the biggest problem for the world is not feedimg indian poor. its more likely terrorism in ur country.
if we stop investing on development and start distributing money to poor then when they come out ou poverty they will have nothing to show their skills.
we need world class institutions so absorb these ppl. educated pakistanis have noting to do in their country. u guys leave ur country as soon as possible. all ur politicians children are in eu or us.
