What's new

India's porverty reduced from 269 million to 172 million : World Bank

just go with World bank number....India number may be lower if consider $1.25...

No, you are not getting it. When the world band official global poverty line was $1.25, India gov was using Rs 32 for urban, Rs 26 for rural as official Indian poverty line, as it considered Rs 32 for urban was equivalent to $1.25. It has been like this since 2012. What I want to know is what are the numbers in terms Rs used this time.

These low IQ Indians dont understand what you want. Let me explain vedic maths to you.

Eventhough its 1.9 USD India is now using Rs. 130. But $1.9 is around Rs 140

And then people abuse me because I say its all fake numbers.

Previously:

Poor people = Number of people earning less than a dollar a day = 269 million

New Indian economists under Modi

Poor people = Number of people earning less than a half a dollar a day = 172 million

Hurray!!!

$1.9 is Rs.123. So actually Indian poverty figures are much lower than what is being stated here.

You increased the poverty line from Rs 33 to Rs 123, then your number of poor people magically lower by some 100 millions ? Dose it make sense to you?

"Poverty line is an income threshold below which families are considered poor. India’s official poverty line had snowballed into a major political controversy.

Last year, a study by a panel headed by former chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council, C Rangarajan, estimated that 363 million, or 29.5% of India’s 1.2-billion people lived in poverty in 2011-12. The Rangarajan panel considers people living on less than Rs 32 a day in rural areas and Rs 47 a day in urban areas as poor.

A panel headed by late economist Suresh Tendulkar fixed the poverty line at an income threshold of Rs 27.2 a day in rural areas and Rs 33.3 in cities."

You want me to show you ground reality? But then again I may get banned.

I am sure you are tempted beyond your control to post pics of Indian slums, but remember Indian slums host a very tiny portion of Indian population. For every slum pic you post there are literally thousands of pics of incredible wealth and prosperity in India.

What's all this continuous rant about Vedic maths?? Don't know why they are using this as a slang, because every Indian is proud of it. And remember, even the so called Arabic numerical system is nothing but Vedic Maths.

Dude, the figure of 1.9$ is in PPP. Now does it make sense?? Don't go by the figure of Rs.130, its misleading. At 130rs a day you are far far away from being poor in India

No, we are using the PPP measure and not nominal value to measure poverty in India. A Western middle class equivalent can be obtained at Rs. 123 if one was to go by nominal values.

So many Indian members here do not know the poverty line was defined as PPP dollar.

I know you are using PPP, so what you stated (Rs 123 as the poverty line) in your previous post was not correct. Last year, Indian gov was using Rs 33.2 for urban poverty line. Do you have current figure? Rs 123 is only enough for one meal in an inexpensive restaurant, that is far from Western middle class equivalent though.

Great link, by the way, very informative.
