India's Olympic Achievement: Indifference

Oh we are bad at sports, so we'll pretend like it's not important in order to make ourselves feel better. Sounds a lot like 'sour grapes' and excuses for failure and incompetence.

Sounds more to me like lack of understanding of what India actually is. Always trying to fix square peg in a round hole.

@Gibbs

I kinda agree with some of his statements. Yes we do lack physical and mental abilities but those are not because of genetics. Because of the way an Indian kid is grown up and the type of food we take. Indian kids are preached with education and money mentality from the day we are born. So it's hard for one to shift into sporting mentality of such high level suddenly.

Coming to food...most of North Indians prefer veggies excluding Punjab, Haryana and few north Indian states and with some decent facilities people from these states went onto win medals in Boxing and Wrestling. People from these states make core of Hockey team.

Now coming to South..people from Tamil Nadu and Kerala take heavy meats like beef and lambs and with some decent facilities people from these states make core of Volleyball, Basketball and athletics. So Genetics has nothing to do with our performance. If we have some good facilities and academies, we can perform way better than this.

Earlier we had families struggling for decent meal and their kids are groomed like money machines. But now more and more urbanization with wider visions from parents ( lets call them modern Indians) combined with exposure to such sports yielding some results. Performance in sports is directly related to development of a country in a whole. soon you will reaize this and importantly the way sports bodies is running in our country must be changed. I would blame government for this mishap, mostly c0ongress which ruled us for more than 60 years. Hopefully we are on our right way...don't bring your genetics BS.

PS

Cricket is pussy game. For each and every person here watching cricket : Please be aware cricket is not even a sport. Its for lazay *** people with no competent metality. Stop worshipping cricketers. go look at our Football team players, watch I-league not crappy drama IPL. Watch basketball, volleyball and Hockey.

STOP WATCHING CRICKET WITH LAZY *** PEOPLE RUNNING WITH TUMMIES.

Indians are generally not Athletically inclined people physically or mentally.. Per capita they are the worst Athletic nation in the world.. All this other excuses about priority on education is just sticking the head in sand
Sports has never been considered as a serious career option so parents force kids from childhood into studies. And moreover Govt. hasn't provided proper sports infra for those who are serious in sports. So saying Indians aren't Athletic is gross generalization.

Indians have a low IQ so I wouldn't expect them to be good at sports either.
Although Africans have a low IQ too, they are pretty good at sports.

India didn't win a single gold medal at the London Olympics.

You're right, Indian priorities are different. Very few if any Indian parents will allow their child to pursue a career in sport. That doesn't mean it's a good thing. Indian parents should encourage their children to succeed, in whichever field their children want to pursue, be it academic, athletic or otherwise.
Main reason why parents don't allow their child to purse a career in sport is because it doesn't rake in some serious moolah. Some great players of yesteryear have died in extreme poverty. On top of that sports authorities have been politicized and lack basic infra, no proper diets. Things are changing for better but at snails pace.

We are not lazy bums like Indians, that why we beat India at Olympics, at PISA, at wars, at economy, at everything.

excuses excuses excuses.
Typical Indians.

You give excuses when you can't win even a single gold medal, you finish near last in PISA tests, get royally embarrassed in wars, your economy fails, your currency collapses, etc etc etc.

Just face it, your Indian.
I'm sorry for you.

Well, if we are truly indifferent then why bother wasting millions of our funds to compete in such events or bid to host/host international sporting events? Let the interested individuals from India play under the independent flag and put all that money to better use.

To sum up, angoor khatte hain!!! :P

Nothing to be embarrassed about.. Australia is a sporting powerhouse, a first world nation that prioritize it's porting achievements.. Again this is not about SL is it?? Why is this fixation with some of you Indian posters every time to change tracks to other countries whenever you cant counter argument.. Like i said given the circumstances economic and social(civil war etc).. The island have punched above it's weight with it's south Asian neighbors with much larger resources and population.. Infact Lankans should be proud

Australia and other western nations can field an all Black athletics team and an all White Aquatics team where the respective communities are known to perform well. Also, western nations scout for talent in foreign nations and offer them citizenship to play under their banner. India cannot afford such extravagances.

But rest assured, all the gold medals in the world didn't stop the United States from being the fattest nation on the planet till it recently got overtaken by Mexico(thanks to American fast food!). Last time I checked, Australia isn't so far behind on the fat index. So your previous point about Indians being athletically challenged doesn't hold any water.

2013 protests in Brazil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The common man hardly benefits. The South African FIFA did nothing to SA's economy. It is a big con job benefiting huge corporations and Media.

Most of the participants use some or other performance enhancing drugs anyway.

Yes, I know about the Brazil protests. What is the point(in relation to my previous post) you are trying to make?

Mine was simple, either play to win or don't bother making excuses when you lose.

All such "I could've won this if I had done that" apologist articles do not help.

Last Wednesday, India celebrated the 65th anniversary of its independence, and officials announced that it would send a space probe to Mars. This is something quite beyond the technical powers or prowess of its former colonial masters—though they, of course, did far better at the Olympics. I hope India will maintain its ability to discriminate between the worthwhile and the worthless.

Points out the priorities. How many kids are actually encouraged to do sports?

My point was the Indians are indifferent. As to why bother spending billions, I was just pointing out that the common men are not consulted as to the spendings the govt does on such spectacles.

I am not making excuses. I am as indifferent to it as the rest of Indians are.

Exactly.

Like I earlier wrote, why then are we spending so much money on competing or hosting such events? If you are truly indifferent, why bother showing up in the first place? Sit at home and write articles about how indifferent we are!!!:partay:

The problem, in actuality, is that we aren't getting any results for the money we put in. And the concerned associations/ sports ministry isn't held to account for a poor medals tally.

I was rather talking about the article making excuses for the poor performance of India. You don't need to tell me about Indians as I am one!!!:P

We bother showing up because everybody else is doing it. It is the herd mentality. The movers and shakers in this country have been trying to shape our country as per their Western role models (to no avail).

The author of the article is British and he really does not need to make excuses for us. It is just that he understands India better than most of its yuppie crowd.

You are of the opinion that the majority of our sports idols who live to compete in such events are a result of herd mentality? I would say we show up in hope that one of them does India proud in his/her event. The problem is that we haven't started taking responsibility about them and that cannot, and rightfully should not, be written away as indifference.

Which is why I found the tone of article unnecessarily patronizing and insulting. The author puts in a few redeeming words in an attempt to balance it out but he is chiefly painting his own bias as India's. What's more is that he is putting it across as if it is a good thing.

As I argued elsewhere people from more impoverished African countries do much better than Indians do. There is no govt focus on them or infrastructure to support them in those countries.

The one field where we are modestly successful is cricket which grew without govt support anyways. It is something Indian kids naturally love to play. Then again for a country of 1.2 billion it is nothing big really. As @Gibbs said even tiny Sri Lanka punches above its weight in cricket.

He is far from patronizing. You have to read the stuff he writes about. He is last of the giants in the English literary field. A man who can speak truth the way it is.
