New Delhi, June 12: The Indian Air Force (IAF) is all set to screen and pick 10 potential crew members in the next two months for Gaganyaan Mission, the country's prestigious maiden human mission to space. According to a report by TOI, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman K Sivan said that the space agency will choose the final three astronauts from the 10 people which will be trained for the mission by the IAF. In February, Sivan had said that the first two levels of training will happen at the IAF’s Institute of Aerospace Medicine (IAM) in Bengaluru, and the final phase of training will be abroad.

TOI report, Sivan said ISRO also tested CE-20 engine which will carry the Indian astronauts to space. Giving details about the role of IAF, DRDO and Indian Navy, Sivan said, the IAF will handle crew selection and training, the DRDO will provide the life support system for crew while the Navy will help in recovering the human capsule once it re-enters the atmosphere and splashes down in sea. According to the TOI report, Sivan said ISRO also tested CE-20 engine which will carry the Indian astronauts to space. Giving details about the role of IAF, DRDO and Indian Navy, Sivan said, the IAF will handle crew selection and training, the DRDO will provide the life support system for crew while the Navy will help in recovering the human capsule once it re-enters the atmosphere and splashes down in sea.

Reports inform that the selection and training of the crew members for the mission will be conducted at ISRO's Human Space Flight Centre which was opened on January 31. The centre has been built adjacent to its headquarters in the city, to develop technologies for the manned space missions.

Gaganyaan, India's maiden manned mission, is a Rs 9,023-crore ambitious project. It involves sending a 3-member crew on board a heavy rocket to an altitude of 350-400 km and orbit around the planet for conducting experiments in space during a week-long voyage. The NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on December 28, 2018 approved the country's first human space flight programme.

In his Independence Day address on August 15, 2018, the Prime Minister had announced that ISRO will send three astronauts, including a woman, in a capsule into space around the earth's orbit for a week-long rendezvous by December 2021 or 2022, which marks the country's 75th year of independence.

It is good that they will be carrying a woman. Additionally, one of the three crew members should be a civilian.

Lastly, I wish that India's ISRO and Pakistan's SUPARCO could collaborate in some capacity.

SUPRACO is not at a stage to allign with ISRO..Rather we should collaborate with South Korea or Israel who are techlogically advance and we will learn from them too..

South Korea and Israel are part of the Western bloc.

I don't know anything about the South Korean program.

About Israel, their recent moon-lander failed, though I am sure they learned from their failure.

However, North Korea has a small human space program.

Well, even a smaller country like Algeria has a government space program.

Having a space agency doesn't make you a spacefairing country. Exploring space actually makes you one. Most countries aren't concerned with scientific research and space exploration.
They just started to adopt satellite technology when they saw its advantages.
Anyways, "most of world" is actually situated in few big countries with large areas, populations and GDPs. And all those countries are very well in space.

They are cooperating as well as racing with each other depending upon their foreign relations. And they are lifting smaller countries along with them to buy influence.

Secondly, there is the SCO ( Shanghai Cooperation Organization ) under whose international umbrella such crewed space missions can be carried out.

Idea would be good. But SCO itself is more like a symbolism of Russian and Chinese influence in Eastern world. So will be reflected by human space program as only Russia & China in organization have human spaceflight capabilities actually substantial space capabilities. India will be just one more addition in biggies who's interests are aligned to the two others but is belligerent with one (PRC) over some other disputes.

It will just become an eastern NATO with 3 USAs instead of one.

Which is why I hadn't included JAXA in my previous country list.

I'm wondering why did you add other spacefairing countries too? They too all are doing good with owns space program.

There is the DPRK's space program which is still in early stage. And let us not forget Iran.

Brazil & Turkey very soon. Even New Zealand.

South Korea and Israel are part of the Western bloc.

That doesn't matter. Them being from any bloc doesn't matter. For India at least.

Middle East is divided in east & west blocs, Pakistan is a pro American state, a key US ally now turning towards PRC and so on.

India is a non aligned de facto strategically autonomous country who is very cozy with both the blocs. And emerging itself gradually as new pole to push back other too. India itself is part of both blocs.

Any country whose interests are aligned with that of India or looking to do so is invited to fly with ISRO with open arms.

India, it's space program or any other program is not affiliated to serve interests of communist regimes that should have been dissolved long ago. Similarly, we aren't approve of imperialism, hegemony and looting machine offered from west bloc either.

We are not on a mission of spreading capitalism or communism or a group of country. We are not a part of cold war or any military alliance. Our only mission is to and should stay to become more & more prosperous and powerful to defend our own interests only.

About Israel, their recent moon-lander failed, though I am sure they learned from their failure.

Israel never sent a probe to moon.

It was a private Google Lunar X-Prize team who used American Falcon 9 to land their rover on moon to wander to win prize.

It's neither any kind of research nor it gives any technological edge to them.
US, Russia, China, France, India & Japan are only real spacefairing nations who are able to carry out extra terrestrial research including any kind of soft landing and no one else comes close by a mile.

Even if Israeli lander could succeed, it won't be an achievement. It had an American rocket.

However, North Korea has a small human space program.

North Korean program is good as Iranian space program or failed old Chinese Projects-714 (Shuangong program). Amounts to nothing.
Sending humans with just encapsulation in rocket isn't possible. Those are/were new countries at that time.

Development of CZ-2F and GSLV Mk3 had a reason. They carried life support systems with them and capacity to take big enough equipment for long duration missions.

Shuangong, Iranian, Iraqi and North Korean manned space programs are/were based on very primitive space rockets and nothing more than a hot air.

Real feasible programs were Project-912 (planned for 1992 earlier) which was delayed to become Shenzhou and IHSP (2017) that was delayed and now has become Gaganyaan.

That is still not comparable. The mission even if was successful otherwise wouldn't have made Israel self sufficient in achieving intended goal.
