What's new

India's First indigenous aircraft carrier to be launched this December.

What does the sub heading mean, that the ship will be launched at 20,000 ton displacement? Does this mean that so far only 50% by tonnage has been completed?

They still have to add the major equipment and the gearbox is still not installed so I think the gas turbines are either still not not installed or are in the process of being installed. So I guess, yes it is still half the tonnage.

great news ... it will carry 16 -- Mig 29k/N-Tejas combo ... will provide good air defence to nearby battle group...and will be more than enough to handle any navy ships other than USN ... great news :)

In the defending mode,we can kick USN too (i think!)

No,INS Vikrant will carry 30 fixed wing fighters and 10 Helicopters onboard.
By the way, couldn't they have used glass reinforced plastic-carbon composite combo instead of steel to build the hull??It could have made the Vikrant much lighter, tougher and increased the speed and range.

may be if thr ships are close to our land, but on open seas they are the TOP DOG ... they have the most formidable Air Defense and Ground Attack Punch out thr ... we have still ions to go before we acquire capabilities like thrs ...

Atleast,we can kick their arse real hard!

Vikrant can park 6-7 ... on flat top .. and carry not more than 9-10 fighter aircrafts that can be in deploy able positions...
40K Ton Aircraft Carrier is not a Air Base for attacking on enemy land ... but merely for defending the navy fleet in circle and for that 16 aircrafts out of which 4-6 can be active in air are more than enough ....

you have to keep in mind that the exercise would have been done with keeping China in mind so, US Navy was not playing the role of USN.. but most probably Chinese Navy, so it might be possible that F-18 E/F were flying with Jaguars on a mission to take chinese carrier down ... where may be F-18 E/F were limiting or streaching thr capabily to play the role of Indian Navy Mig - 29K or Su - 30MKI...

Here's what she'll look like....

Capabilities

The ship will have an endurance of 8,000 nautical miles. It will have two takeoff runways and a landing strip with 3 arrester wires. It will be able to carry a maximum of 30 aircraft with adequate hangarage capacity. The carrier is designed with a very high degree of automation for machinery operation, ship navigation and survivability.

Weapons and Sensors

The carrier will field long-range surface-to-air missile (LR SAM) systems with a multi-function radar, a close-in weapon system, the most modern C/D band early air-warning radar and the V/UHF tactical air-navigational and direction finding systems. It will have jamming capabilities over the expected electromagnetic (EM) environment, along with carrier control approach radars to aid air operations. Integration of all weapon systems on board will be through an indigenous combat management system (CMS). The ship’s integration with the Navy’s network-centric operations will provide for force multiplication.

Aircraft Complement

The Navy plans to equip IAC-1 with a mix of MiG-29K / LCA Naval Variant currently under development at ADA. However, in view of the slow progress of the LCA project, the service is actively looking at alternatives. It has isued an RFI (request for information) to several global aviation majors, including American Boeing, French Dassault and Russian MiG companies, for ‘an alternate deck-based aircraft’. The US has even offered the F-35.

Cheers!

30 Aircrafts means.... half of them will be choppers ....

Floats out .. Means the Hull has left the dock, and thats less than 40% of the total work..Still a long way to go for completion.
