India’s defence imports 40 times its export basket

@gslv mk3 so man whats up? how r u?aren't you were the one who told me that India is blah blah ,Indigenous weapons etc etc etc etc etc etc? So this article is Bs...total BS bro...i m with u...!

I was talking about the past,Chnia was the biggest importer of weapons before India and just like it managed to create a good indigenous industry India will also do that but it will take some time.
PS-China still imports high tech weapons and not just engines last time i checked,India uses Insas and imports assaults rifles for Special forces only.China does not import rifles for special forces because no western country will sell because of copying nature of China.

And you still refuse to aknowledge the fact that China has always exported more than India.
Ever heard of the concept net imports?

Indian imports has been rising. China imports has been declining.

Please enlighten me what other high tech weapons China is importing besides jet engines. And how much does that contribute in the overall volume? China can import jet engines , but cant import rifles because copying nature? You smoking some good weed , son. They were exporting their versions of AK 47 when India was still in the Soviet camp,

Didnt acknowledge but didnt refuse also because it is offtopic.Just gave an example of China to a Pakistani who was trolling.

Yeah Indian imports have been rising but only in monetary terms but percentage wise they are decreasing.

China was the second larges importer between year 2008 to 2012.IF you want to see individual imports and then check out SIPRI website.

Kid,Copying Rifles is not same as copying jet engines otherwise China would have not been importing it.

This is exactly what i was talking about no western nation sells to China because of China's exporting there version(copied versions) to other countries.

Still several times better than other developing nations including yours. First you should indigenise a 70cc engine in your nation then talk us about our imports.
FYI Demand from Indian Armed Forces is huge .So they can only support our Forces but only for now .Indian Navy is the best example. Our Shipyards is in full book order from Navy.
Sorry cant digest a troll like you.

India’s defence imports 40 times its export basket

(Defence minister Manohar Parrikar has told Parliament that the total expenditure on “direct payments to foreign vendors for capital acquisitions” for the Army, Navy and IAF during the last five years stood at Rs 1,03,535 crore. )

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi may want India to start exporting weapons in a major way, instead of importing them in large numbers, but it will take a lot of doing. Latest figures show India's arms imports are a staggering 40 times the size of its exports, and will remain so for the foreseeable future.

Defence minister Manohar Parrikar has told Parliament that the total expenditure on "direct payments to foreign vendors for capital acquisitions" for the Army, Navy and IAF during the last five years stood at Rs 1,03,535 crore ($16.72 billion).

In sharp contrast, as per a written reply in Lok Sabha on Friday, the five defence PSUs, four shipyards and 39 ordnance factories as well as the private sector, all put together managed to export defence equipment worth just a paltry Rs 1,644 crore in the last three years. The figure in the first six months of the ongoing fiscal stands at just Rs 167 crore.

India, of course, has the dubious distinction of being the world's largest arms importer due to a stagnant defence-industrial base (DIB), which forces the armed forces to acquire 65% of their requirements from abroad.

The Modi government's rhetoric on the "Make in India" policy with greater private sector participation in the defence production sector will take several years — if at all — to materialize on the ground. It will need sweeping systemic reforms to revive the country's DIB from its prolonged stupor.

Sources, however, say the defence ministry is now working to "streamline" the "complicated" indigenous defence production policy. There is an attempt, for instance, to revive the provision for the government to fund 80% of the development cost of a weapon prototype, with the industry chipping in with 20%, in "high-risk projects".

The battle has to be fought on two fronts. First, a radical overhaul of the functioning of DRDO, defence PSUs, Ordnance Factory Board and shipyards is needed to ensure they can deliver cutting-edge weapons in a cost-effective and timely manner.

Concomitantly, the private sector has to be encouraged to enter defence production in a major way. "There has to be concrete government support with confirmed orders since defence projects are capital-intensive and have long-gestation periods," said an officer.

India will remain strategically vulnerable till it builds a robust DIB since supplies can be choked in times of need. China has assiduously built a strong DIB, making it the world's third-largest arms exporter, even though it also remains the third-largest importer.

India also does not still get the biggest bang for its buck. There is no concrete long-term planning to systemically build military capabilities, with the three Services continuing to squabble over the limited budgetary pie. Consequently, the armed forces continue to grapple with huge deficiencies in submarines, fighters, helicopters, artillery, air defence weapons, night-fight capabilities and the like.

Well, the military spending diagram is what interests/intrigues me. His come Saudi Arabia outspends us, Japan, France, Brazil, India, Germany etc, even though all these countries have a far far far bigger economy than Saudi? Wow.
Also surprised to see India spends more than Brazil, even though the later has a bigger economy. Same with Russia outspending the U.K, France, Japan Germany, Brazil, even though the later countries have a bigger economy than Russia.

Taking all these into consideration, seems India, Russia, Saudi wahabi Arabia still overspends on their military. Especially Russia(which I kind if understand, since its one if the few/only thing left that makes it relevant/world power today). I will say Japan is one of the few countries in this group, who despite having a very very high standard of living, still spends quite small amount/wisely on its military........interesting news, Thanks for the post.

With new government's focus on export, the ration will decrease

Not necessarily, because the government wants to export anything, not specifically Indigenous defence equipment. The Do 228 that is build in India at Tata and HAL for example would be an export product for them, since it's largly manufactured in India. That's why they put so much effort to invite foreign companies to invest and produce their products in India.

OFB is a joke. But shipyards have a lot of limitation. They have already a full book order from India for a few years.Expansion of these shipyards and fullfilling of Indian Naval order will enable them for export.
But aerospace division is still an issue.
@sancho

As mentioned above, it's not really the issue about what we can develop, but about what we can manufacture in India and export again.

Not bothered about exports.

But definitely want imports to be reduced in favour of Indian indengioys weapons..even shared technologies

So whats indias totals defence exports for this year? Which countries have been buying indian weapons a d whats the best selling product?

It doesn't make much difference whether it was indigenous or made in India weapons.

Typical delusional answer from an Indian..as usual...!

counter india? since when we degraded ourself to a position of countering india? india was never on the radar of our strategic focus and will never be. don't height yourself so much.

Yes to counter India because This Junk chinese Subs are not good enough. I do not say that. It is said by China Times.

China considers buying four Russian Amur-Class AIP submarines|Politics|News|WantChinaTimes.com

China needs submarines to counter threats from India's fleet and build a fleet to resist America's influence, said the Voice of Russia,

It is natural for India and China to show interest in Russia's Amur-Class submarines, said a retired Russian Navy general named Sivkov. The submarine is superior to the export version of China's 877 submarine and China would want the Amur-Class vessel since India has them.

It prove that that huge inventory of Junk is not woth countering Indian Subs or American Subs.

Well, your diagram, proved my point even more.
Developed/weathier countries seems to be the ones spending less on their military GDP % wise. How come developed countries like Italy, Germany, Japan, Australia etc spend just 1% or so of their GDP on defence than poorer developing countries like India who need this cash even more to improve their living standards than rich countries, and to make things worse, a major proportion of this amount is spent on importing weapons from us in the west/U S and Russia, making our companies even more wealthy/powerful than they are already.:disagree: Same with poor countries like Pakistan spending a huge proportion of their GDP on defence with a considerable amount in imports. Meanwhile this money would have better been spent in the country itself/economy. Developing countries need to have a realisty check on whey they stand compared to other countries and know where their priorities should lie.

At least even though Russia still overspends on its military(over 4%:o:, way more than china, india and even U.S o_O), still most/almost all of their military spending is spent locally/internally and they also exports tons of them abroad earning them valuable cash. so I will still give them that, they have an excuse at least :cheesy:, even though that is unsustainable in the long run as well.
Saudi Arabia and UAE get almost all their major weapon systems from abroad, but I can still give them this, since they have the cash/money to burn and a relatively decent living standards. Though they sure could do far better.:D
Anyway hope these poorer countries will get their acts together as their living standards improve , spend wisely, as this billions are needed more internally than on buying fancy toys from our defence companies/lobbies. After all, nobody is ever going to attack/invade a nuclear power like north Korea, much less bigger ones like Pakistan or India. :pop:

Tell me, what exactly was "delusional" in his comment?

Burying your head into the sand and denying everything just makes you look pathetic"
