Perception from 80s and 90s, it's actually rapidly urbanizing city like rest of the metros.

British architectures are in central Calcutta, which are kept intact and renovated. Newer architectures are usual steel and glass.

Worst part of the Kolkata is starting from the Howrah Bridge (Howrah Station is the ugliest), Posta, Burrabazar, M G road and other old areas. South Kolkata is cool, so is Salt Lake. Now the area from Airport to Ultalanga also looks very nice. Rajarhat New Town is very good. But the areas on VIP road like Baguiati, Keshtapur have become very crowded and unplanned. Cleanlyness, Illegal occupation of the pavements and streets by hawkers -these two problems are to be resolved immediately. Thankfully they have booted away the 2-stroke autos and old buses.
