India's Ambassador Gets Pat-Down At US Airport

This is Mississippi...one of the most racist states in the US...with a strong history of past racism.

A good official rebuke should be in order.. Diplomats have diplomatic immunity and to ignore it is a cardinal sin.

And you live in the effin same country.
Where Indians,or rather Asians are considered secondary people.

Well Mississippi is from the south...After all the south was the bastion slavery from the earliest days, thus no wonder those people still have racist attitudes. The irony is that the rest of the America (East and West) would not even want to touch the Midwest/South with a 10 meter pole, as the latter are considered the most backward of the American states.

Just don't generalize an Entire country. FYI Indians/Asians are more than welcome in the eastern/western United states and are not treated like secondary citizens. In fact they are considered a good example of a model citizen. With the recent (in the past few decades) influence of many traditionally Indian concepts and practices(like yoga...Hinduism/Buddhism etc etc) most Americans have a very positive attitude towards Indians in general...so much so that sometimes they take it to the extremes even.lol

Having said that...sure there are racists...but most of them are from Midwestern America and the southern states which are stuck in a time warp.....one could even say that they are the backwaters of the nation and should not merit much attention.

The Indian government should uphold the diplomatic immunity and take this complaint to the highest level. Already there is a lot of news about this event even here in the major news agencies, and the consensus seems to be that the TSA messed up big time, and it should be reformed ASAP. Hell..even during the height of the cold war diplomats and diplomatic pouches(were called "pouches" but often they were "containers!") were inviolate. Literally the soviet could have sent a nuke to their Embassy in America; and America could not have done a damn thing about it...and viceversa. Even today...for example an diplomatic visa holder(embassy employee) could get away with any crime...he can literally kill 10 people..and still don't have to face any prosecution by the nation where he committed those crimes. The most that could be done for him is that he be deported without any chance of re-entry.

Its up to the Indian government to stick to its guns and not back down in the face of platitudes as this is contrary to international law...doubly so when the TSA folks were informed that she was a diplomat and her credentials established. Expect to see a few heads roll over this.

patting down searches is a normal thing at airports and even bus terminals in India and Pakistan.

But yeah we desis have our elite politicians exempted from any security search.

on the other hand i would say we desis should also put same criteria here for foreigners.

nothing wrong as long as we act on equal footing

Its funny actually how Indians are criticizing the US for a humiliating treatment at the US airport. Had the same happened to any Pakistani Ambassador or a VIP, we would hear a different story where Indians would be telling us we need to sort our house before complaining and why the world thinks the same about Pakistan.
At the end it seems there ant much difference when it comes to viewing Indians and Pakistanis from the US prism, whatever difference maybe is because of the money India can offer to the US companies.

There are certain diplomatic immunities that need to be maintained even for the sake US diplomats. Diplomats can not be searched or padded down. Diplomats are not average John and Jane Does.

At least they could have confirmed her identity, and dealt with it more gracefully.

On a side note: TSA folks need more training.

Not to flame. Its definitely not about the money. But no Indian ever participated in terror attacks in US. But several Pakistanis did. That is something to be considered. Why are they even suspecting every brown person in their airport? Think honestly, you would know the answer.

But anyways, Pat downs are disgusting, they even touch your Junk. Doing that in a clear sight is the most humiliating thing that can happen to you. That too to an ambassador of a country and twice at that is a big no no.

Feeling a little touchy are we??? It is definitely about money and nothing more. The white skin cow boys still consider you and me browns. Difference is you guys have a silver coin in your pocket the US has set its eyes on, we on the other hand, well sadly have nothing to offer thanks to the inapt governments and so called democracy.

Not really. I am just saying what it is. Before 911, there never used to be this discrimination. I lived here before then. Now they are associating brown skin to terrorists. Although Indians did no wrong, we are the most who are suffering. They see me in the airport, they assume I am a Muslim and a terrorist. Not to say, they are bloody hell wrong in stereotyping. But it is what it is.

Its definitely not about money, its about perceptions. If it was about money, there would have been no pat dawns for Indians especially to an ambassador. But you are free to believe whatever you want.

suck it up, its a sign of the times.

The problem is we feel offended because we have ego problem. When someone check us thoroughly we think he is insulting me. The way we look at it is a problem. If you look at it thinking, he is doing a good job making sure we all are safe, we will be fine. That guy who is checking you does not know who you are and what your intentions are, I appreciate US for not being VIP centric as we are. We want VIP treatment, I read in the newspaper that there is no protocol to bypass a diplomat. Why we want such treatment, only for ego problem? What is wrong in following a security procedure?

I was given pat down in US and the guy who checked as me, do you know why I am doing. I replied, yes just to make our journey safe. I was happy he was doing it and felt safe travelling. I had no ego issue because I did not took it negatively.

That is where the problem lie, same incidence can impact you differently if you think different way. I think she took it as an insult on her, that is why she felt that way.
