One of the country’s leading scientists and former Isro chairman G. Madhavan Nair on Saturday propounded the theory that some shlokas in the Vedas mentioned about presence of water on the moon and astronomy experts like Aryabhatta knew about gravitational force much before Issac Newton.

Speaking at an international conference on Vedas, the 71-year-old Padma Vibhushan awardee said the Indian vedas and ancient scriptures also had information on metallurgy, algebra, astronomy, maths, architecture and astrology way before the western world knew about them.

He, however, added that the information in vedas was in a “condensed format” which made it difficult for the modern science to accept it. “Some sholkas in one of the Vedas say that there is water on the moon but no one believed it. Through our Chandrayaan mission, we could establish that and we were the first ones to find that out,” Mr Nair said.

He further said that everything in Vedas could not be understood as they were in chaste Sanskrit. He also talked very highly about fifth century astronomer- mathematician Aryabhatta saying, “We are really proud that Aryabhatta and Bhaskara have done extensive work on planetary work and exploration of outer planets. It was one of the challenging fields. Even for Chandrayaan, the equation of Aryabhatta was used. Even the (knowledge of) gravitational field… Newton found it some 1,500 years later… The knowledge existing (in our scriptures),” he said.

Mr Nair, who was Isro chairman from 2003–09, also claimed geometry was used to make calculations for building cities during the Harappan civilisation and the Pythagorean theorem also existed since the vedic period.

The comments by Mr Nair came in the backdrop of many BJP leaders talking about ancient Indian scriptures having scientific information including on plastic surgery as well as aero-dynamics.

doesn't matter even if true. Newton is the man.

Keeps getting better & better..:D

Although Mr Nair a South Indian didn't know Harappa etx lie in Pak .. Punjab .. The same Pubjabis who pretty much hated "hindustanis" ... Where hinduism couldn't take much root..

i think modi should hire Russel Peters it will make things more interesting:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I agree with our Pakistani and yet-to-arrive Chinese mockers - this is getting ridiculous.

……
Did he write the formula F=G*m1*m2/r²
Impossible, because the concept of "force" itself was invented by Newton. Before that, nobody thought or described anything in terms of forces. That doesn't mean that nobody could describe gravitation - just that nobody would describe it in terms of "force", and therefore that "F" in the equation would have been meaningless to them.

Instead of opening threads about the scientific achievements of ancient Hindus and their hundreds of deities every now and then, why not just make a thread of what scientific achievements was not acquired by them back then but is present today.

Did they also have their own version of social media tools like Facebook, Twitter, Whats App etc. back then?

:haha: Its so funny that Pakistanis just cant take it when something good about India is posted and you need to stay in the topic and stop bringing up religion in topics ......... It just shows how retarded you guys are

Many missing the crux of his statement " added that the information in vedas was in a “condensed format” which made it difficult for the modern science to accept it" ......

Brahmagupta
, the ancient Indian astronomer and mathematician, held the view that the earth was spherical and that it attracts things. Al Hamdānī and Al Biruni quote Brahmagupta saying "Disregarding this, we say that the earth on all its sides is the same; all people on the earth stand upright, and all heavy things fall down to the earth by a law of nature, for it is the nature of the earth to attract and to keep things, as it is the nature of water to flow, that of fire to burn, and that of the wind to set in motion. If a thing wants to go deeper down than the earth, let it try. The earth is the only low thing, and seeds always return to it, in whatever direction you may throw them away, and never rise upwards from the earth."

Ancient Indian mathematician Bhaskaracharya, in his book Siddhanta Shriromani, defined laws of gravity in the 12th century, 500 years before Newton defined them for us. The speed of light has been known to Indians since the Vedic period, centuries before it was calculated by the Western world.
Maitree, a group of professionals from Tata Consultancy Services and Bengaluru-based NGO Samskrita Bharati, have come together with a unique exhibition, Pride of India, to spread awareness about India's rich scientific heritage.
The exhibition in Pune on Friday April 16th showcased 150 posters, each explaining one Sanskrit shloka from ancient Indian scientific literature.
"The shlokas (verses) by ancient scientists and mathematicians like Bhaskaracharya, Baudhayana, Apastambha and Bhaskaracharya's daughter Leelavati have been showcased in the exhibition." said Aashish Manjaramkar, exhibition coordinator. "Our aim is to tell that zero is not the only contribution that Indians have made to science and math." he added.
Manjramkar commented, "Very few of us know that the speed of light was known to Indians in the Vedic period. A shloka says that the speed of light is 2202 yojana per half nimesha. A yojana is a unit of distance which is equal to 9.06 miles and half a nimesha is one tenth of a second. The figure is very close to the modern measurement of speed of light."
"One of the shlokas in the exhibition describes a conversation between Bhaskaracharya and his daughter Leelavati, who also was a mathematician. The conversation beautifully explains the spherical shape of the earth and the gravitational force that keeps planets revolving in space," said Manjaramkar.
Samskrita Bharati, which works in all major cities of India and also in 16 US cities, was established in 1983 and works for the promotion of Sanskrit as a spoken language. The organization regularly stages such events across India.

Not surprised at all!!
Scientists today have not been able to decode the mystery of pyramids nor have they been able find the secret formula of the non rusting compound used in a pillar (at Qutab Minar, which btw is 1000yrs old) but they 've the audacity to laugh at the scientists of past.
Have no doubt that there were civilisations before us, which were far more developed, but to myopic and ignorant ppl, such things are a part of "mythology".

gravity is the most obvious thing ever, some ancient Indian could well have worked out the math way back.. :D

Retarded.. Hmmmm .. Okay ... Enjoy your ancient nuclear wars, inter space travelling space ships with reverse heard, genetically n molecular engineering, ancient plastic surgery - replacing a boy's head with an elephants, n now this ...

N sorry you guys forgot all that ... I deeply am ..:(
