Nowadays, it is not at all rare to see students stressed, anxious, or perplexed about their future. The ongoing pandemic has added to those concerns in every possible way. But it is indeed disheartening to see the students failing to cope with the pressure and ultimately ending their lives.

A similar incident was witnessed by one of the premier higher education institutes in Delhi, Lady Shri Ram College for Women. A second-year student of Mathematics honors committed suicide on the night of the 2nd of November at her house in Rangareddy district, Telangana.

The incident came into light when the message of her death was circulated by one of her close friends in an informal WhatsApp group of LSR college hostel.

A 2019 state topper, she was selected for the INSPIRE scholarship provided by the Ministry of Science and Technology for her outstanding performance in class 12th. But unfortunately, she could not lay hands on the fellowship grant, the first installment of which she was supposed to receive by March 2020.

Belonging to a working-class family, she was in dire need of the scholarship money. In fact, her family had confirmed that they had to mortgage their house to ensure their daughter’s further studies at Delhi University.

In a meeting with the SFI Ranga Reddy District Committee, her family even disclosed the fact their younger daughter had to discontinue her studies after her 7th grade as they could not afford to educate both their daughters.

The coronavirus pandemic did exacerbate the existing complications. In an online form circulated by the Committee for Inclusive Education under LSR SU, she had expressed her inability to attend all the classes and complete her assignments due to mobile and connectivity issues.

The suicide note recovered from her home was handed over to the President of SFI Ranga Reddy District Committee by her family members. This note was then circulated with SFI Delhi.

The suicide note seemed to have revealed financial pressures to be the prima facie motive behind her death. She admitted that her family had to incur cumbersome expenses due to her higher education and that she did not want to be a burden on her family.

But then she could not have lived without studying as well. Therefore she had no choice left than to welcome her own death.

Her family has not lodged any police complaint yet, as they do validate the concerns raised by their daughter. There is also no information on any possible postmortem.

In the meantime, the college had already held an obituary ceremony on the 3rd of November. However, no official statement regarding the alleged suicide has been released by the college administration.

It is immensely shattering to see the loss of such bright and young lives, particularly at times like this when the regressive divisions of caste, class, gender, and geography become more prominent than ever.

@FlashGordon @prashantazazel, something that should be a minor everyday affair as getting education becomes a big thing in India. An unnecessary and very avoidable loss of life here. Education should be a free human right of every citizen to whatever point they want to pursue. What's the problem of the Indian government not funding such a simple thing as education when there are real bigger things like Elon Musk building up the system to transport people between Earth and Mars ? I don't understand this artificial system called scholarship money that is made available to only a few students when the entire education system can be made free and for all.

. .
Sad, but people commit suicide for a variety of reasons.

You can give free everything to everyone and people will still be offing themselves.

.
Her funds were deviated for terrorism in Balochistan.

I don't know about that but I know that India has become the world's second-largest importer of armaments. This is unnecessary posturing for outside when the government should be spending financial, material and human resources inside to make India a welfare state with basic necessities including education being free, like I have proposed in this thread.

Sad, but people commit suicide for a variety of reasons.

When a person commits suicide for socio-economic reasons that suicide is failure on part of that country.

Whether student suicides or farmer and laborer suicides, or white-collar professional suicides or businessman suicides or love couple suicides, these are systemic failures.

Most or almost all suicides are avoidable.

You can give free everything to everyone and people will still be offing themselves.

Can you give an example from such a country where it has happened ?

There are numerous cases of rich people who commit suicide because of incurring losses, a socio economic reason.

Can you give an example from such a country where it has happened ?
Don't know of any country where everyone gets everything free, but knowing people, they'll still end up taking their own lives anyway, systemic failures, as you call them.

You think people weren't suicide the USSR ?

I've know of people with seemingly perfect lives but still ended it.

I'll also bet there's loads of other people in very difficult socio economic situations but who persevere and don't suicide.

Sure, like the owner of Cafe Coffee Day or the interior designer in the Arnab Goswami case.

If you visit my linked thread I have said not everything can be for free except basic necessities ( basic food, water, housing, healthcare, education etc ).

And I don't think people in the socialist Libyan Jamahiriya would have suicided in the same percentage as in capitalist India.

You think people weren't suicide the USSR ?

Well, I don't know about the number of suicides there what I know is that murder was considered a capitalist crime there, because in other societies most murders are socio-economic. Extrapolating this I don't think suicides in the USSR were that high as in the "free world".

I've know of people with seemingly perfect lives but still ended it.

Well, when "high-ranking" students cannot confide in their own parents and get support from them and end their lives then people with seemingly perfect lives would also have real troubled thoughts inside of them.

I'll also bet there's loads of other people in very difficult socio economic situations but who persevere and don't suicide.

Certainly there will be some people like that. Either they persevere by planning how to obtain resources and without much support from near and dear ones or the near and dear ones support them.

I've known of others too. Big league money, model type wife, sportscars, holiday homes in other countries.. you name it.. still one day you hear they killed themselves.

Suicide is always sad, doesn't matter if it's some really rich person or some really poor person.

India already have lots of socialist programs including education (basic education and healthcare)

No idea about Libya but they had all that oil wealth, we have people's wealth that they created themselves, don't steal it.. else what incentive will people have to keep trying to better their lives ?

In India very few pay their tax, can't sustain everybody else by taking from them.. these are the job creator class and the hard working middle class people. Please don't start with that retarded commie idea about about how the 12 rupee tax on a 150 rupee burger is the same as an income tax :P

Many consider heavy handed big central government taxation to be a socialist crime.

Yep, it's called the human condition.

Certainly there will be some people like that. Either they persevere by planning how to obtain resources and without much support from near and dear ones or the near and dear ones support them.
Not some, MOST people are like that, their near and dear ones supporting them or not.

Life is a struggle, even for folks in the rich world. Suicides overall are very rare. Socialism isn't going to stop it, or, even if it did stop a certain sub group of depressed people from offing themselves.. others will still do it. The problem remains.

Some millionaire committing suicide and leaving behind their kids and family is just as big a tragedy as this poor girl who just wanted to study. The rich kids' tears for their departed parent are just as big a tragedy as the poor parents' tears for their departed kid.

.
I was on Scholarship in SRCC ( hailing from Lallo Land in those dark days). DU is very flexible. Currently no body is pressing for fees.

If some babu sat on processing the file , it is very sad. If the fund has been the issue, its so sad. DU fees is hardly 5 k a year. I am just not understanding the rationale. She was so promising. She was in the premier institute.

What a loss. What a loss. I pray for her family and her aatma shanti.

Yes.

Not some, MOST people are like that, their near and dear ones supporting them or not.

The tragedy in India is that many times the near and dear ones either wantedly don't help or aren't able to find a way to help because of themselves being in a dog-eat-dog society.

I will give an example. I watched recently a small bit of Friday's Kaun Banega Crorepati. The special guest was an activist from a women's rights organization. She spoke of a woman who was troubled a lot in her in-laws house. The activist took this woman back to her paternal house and spoke of divorce being the only solution but her paternal family said that no one in their preceding generations had taken divorce and sent the woman back to her in-laws. Two days later she hung herself.

I will again quote KBC. Many of the contestants will not have seen in their life an amount of 320,000 rupees.

In capitalist societies like India there is no harmony between most people, either seen in temporary manifestations or in permanency.

India already have lots of socialist programs including education (basic education and healthcare)

I will quote the supposed socialist program of food distribution that we call "Ration". If it is running as designed why do people die of hunger in year 2020 ? Or at least are malnutritioned ?

Death by hunger is a very avoidable and artificial thing in year 2020. It is as tragic as suicides for socio-economic reasons.

Suicides overall are very rare.

Well, they may seem rare because of the huge population of India but I will quote an oft repeated tragedy. Between 1995 and 2015 more than 300,000 Indian farmers committed suicide, again for socio-economic reasons. 300,000+ can be the population of a small or medium sized town.

If some babu sat on processing the file , it is very sad.

Yes, in these days of computerization this shouldn't have happened.

Additionally, this suicide would not have happened if education was free in India.

If you look for problems, you will find problems. Our problems are related to a lower level of industrialization, massive population, lack of education, backward religious and cultural practices, easy satisfaction with a low standard of life, low effort towards research and innovation, etc.

Wealth inequality is not the cause of our problems. In fact, rich people generate employment where there would be none. India will be way poorer , with a worse standard of living, if not for our rich industrialists. Your ideas will create laid back people, who just exist and contribute little. Basic social safety nets aren't a bad idea. But if you don't allow the best people to have a drastically better life, there would be no incentive to be the best way anything. Everyone will be mediocre.
