Indian warship collides with trawler

A fishing trawler sank after colliding with Navy's frontline frigate INS Talwar near Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra injuring four of the 27 persons on board the civilian vessel, Navy officials said today. This is the fourth mishap involving a naval warship this year including INS Sindhurakshak accident where the vessel sank inside the Mumbai harbour after an explosion in its torpedo section.

INS Talwar collided with an unlit fishing trawler near Ratnagiri coast in Maharashtra around 9.30 pm on Monday night in which all the 27 occupants of the civilian vessel fell in the sea, officials said in New Delhi.

All the persons in the trawler were pulled out by INS Talwar and dropped on the shore after being provided required medical attention, they said. Four of the civilians, who are fishermen, suffered minor injuries in the mishap, sources said. The Navy has ordered a Board of Inquiry to ascertain the reasons behind the incident, sources said.

Navy sources said the mishap took place as the fishing trawler was operating without lights and could not be seen in the dark. The fishing vessel suffered extensive damage and sunk right on the spot.

This year, Navy warships have been involved in four mishaps. A fire broke out on INS Konkan at the dry dock in Visakhapatnam on Navy Day on 4 December when it was in the dry dock for maintenance. The fire incident had come a day after Navy Chief Admiral DK Joshi asserted that Navy's record was "not all that bad" in terms of accidents when compared to other navies in the world.

On 14 August, INS Sindhurakshak had sunk in Mumbai naval harbour after an explosion probably in its torpedo section killing all 18 personnel on board. Soon after that a fire incident took place on aircraft carrier INS Viraat off the coast of Mumbai. Defence Minister AK Antony had pulled up the Navy for the sinking of INS Sindhurakshak and asked the force not to fritter away expensive resources of the nation.

No need to translate me mate. It was pretty straight forward. Its just that ship collision is not that big an issue and mistakes may happen any time.

the incident occured maybe due to the incompetence of the crew of the said trawler.these men were probably drinking at that time and hence couldn't see the warship and eventually collided with it.i am pretty much sure that after a proper investigation the truth will come forward,personaaly i think the crew of that trawler are the main culprits as they were sailing on the sea without any light in the middle of the night......

This frigate is near coast where dozens of other vessels are also around there how can frigate know that this trawler is didn't see them & come to collide. When it come too close then navy can't shoot it because it is civilian & too small to make any damage to warship.

These fishing trawlers crew put down their nets and then start drinking.when they get drunk ,they are fk bothered about their own or other ships safety.Best way to avoid them is to keep good lookout which some merchant navy and navy ships forget especially during parties onboard held in festive season

Shipping accidents are a reality of sea life. But I think there are too many incidents with IN in the recent past. I hope they will work on their ops to avoid it.
