Indian UAVs deployed on Sir Creek border with Pakistan
The home ministry has revealed to a parliamentary committee that it has deployed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to keep an eye on the contentious Sir Creek area on the India- Pakistan border.
"Two UAV recees are being carried out each month," the MHA has told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on home affairs, as per the report of the committee submitted on November 3.
This is after this parliamentary committee had pulled up the MHA in 2008 for not paying enough attention to the creek area in the Bhuj sector, which the committee said was a porous region.
The committee also said the area could be used as a launch pad for terrorist activities and gathering information on the patrolling pattern of the country. In its report submitted now, the parliamentary committee has recommended that frequency of UAV recees should be increased in the creek area. Sir Creek is a 96- kilometer strip of water disputed between India and Pakistan in the Rann of Kutch marshlands and divides India's Kutch region of Gujarat and Sindh province of Pakistan.
The home ministry has also told the committee that it has procured four fast attack crafts - which are modified offensive war- ships - from the USA at a total cost of Rs. 38 crore to carry out patrolling in the creek area.
