Indian Navy To Acquire 12 Japanese Amphibious Aircraft

The Indian Navy will acquire 12 US-2i (Utility Seaplane Mark 2) amphibious aircraft from the Japanese firm ShinMaywa Industries under $1.65 billion agreement.

The supply of amphibious search-and-rescue (SAR) aircraft is result of the agreement signed - related to the ‘transfer of defence equipment and technology co-operation’, during the visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to India on December 12, according to The Hindu.

The “agreement provides a framework to enhance defence and security co-operation by making available to each other, defence equipment and technology necessary to implement joint research, development and production,” report points out.

The US-2i version has the basic capability same as the US-2 – the first Japanese aircraft offered to India. However, few equipment changes have been made to cater to the Indian Navy’s role requirement, according to the RFI (request for information).

Another agreement was signed concerning security measures for the protection of classified military information, between Indian signatory G Mohan Kumar, Defence Secretary, and Hiramatsu.

The two countries had earlier expressed their intention to explore potential future projects on defence equipment and technology cooperation such as US-2 amphibious aircraft. ShinMaywa Industries, the manufacturer of the US-2 amphibious aircraft, has already initiated discussions with several Indian companies - Mahindra Defence, Hindustan Aeronautics, Tata Aerospace, L&T and Pipavav Defence naming a few, to reportedly assemble the aircraft in India.

According the report, two US-2i would be imported first, off-the-shelf, while the other 10 would be manufactured in India, under technology transfer arrangements by ShinMaywa Industries with an Indian partner.

Yes sir, US-2 is coming.. IT will be a good addition.. perhaps the numbers may be shared by IN and CG together..
Don know if classified tech may be allowed to install.. if they do, awesome.. we can then perhaps use it for surveillance or detection.
Manufacturing in India could be a big thing as we can then jointly export it as its production rate is limited as of date.

SAR ops sir.. the present SAR capabilities are very limited.. on top being amphibious it can land in water easily and take out the affected parties from sea fly down to land airport and send them to hospital

In some configuration they can carry limited small number of troops.. that can be quick reaction teams.. With almost 4500 km range, it serves us awesome in and around india and preferably around Andaman and Nicobar.. IF we get military tech on them and use them for ASW role we can get them to do much more (not sure if Japan will agree installation).

They are very capable birds and wills erve us in a big way.. Some assets would come under IN surely but majorly under CG for SAR.

No proper airstrip? Sir A&N Islands have a total 4 airstrips and 2 of them can handle all sorts of aircrafts IAF have in service while 3rd one is being upgraded. P-8Is and Su-30MKIs are regularly operated from there.
 
Very good plane. But one thing, do we really need such a big bird just to carry out SAR ( other tasks can be done by this plane but those can be performed by others as well)? I mean those 1.65 billion dollars can spend somewhere else?

How many squadrons of INAS placed there?

India has hundreds of islands that it needs to create some sort of connectivity with- the A&N themselves are made up of dozens of island chains.

This unique asset will play a number of, as of yet entirely unaddressed, roles in the Indian forces- long range SAR, potential emergency transport link with their SSBN/SNN fleet away from shore, connectivity with the island territories of India and as a side role Special Operations.


Of these the ICG should be imparted long range SAR duties in the long term, the IN can retain the rest.
