Congress gets elected on other national issues, despite their support for Muslim concerns. I seriously doubt Muslim rights are anywhere near the top of any non-Muslim voter's agenda.

I know it will be hard to believe, but the only thing perhaps stopping Indians from voting for the BJP is that its apparently not secular. Apart from that there is not much of a difference between Congress and BJP. Yes agreed Muslim rights isn't the top agenda for a non-Muslim voter but its not for a Muslim voter either. Why? because Gujarat riot isn't a daily phenomenon as some Pakistanis make it sound like. Ask any Indian Muslim about it if you don't believe me. And if we were so anti-Muslim, once we found out that Congress government had formed Sachar committee, we wouldn't have voted back them into power in 2008 right?

What I see is that, in most states, Muslim literacy is well below Hindu literacy. This despite the Sachar commission's findings that Muslims parents prefer modern education over madrassas, but have less access to government schools.

Firstly the chart I posted, 5 out of 13 states Muslims had higher literacy rate than Hindus. Assam and West Bengal there are allegations of illegal migration from the bordering country, which could have pulled down Muslims literacy figures in these sates down by a bit.

Why the stats for Indian Muslims is so negatively skewed in Sachar report? Because Muslims of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar,Jharkhand, West Bengal and Assam form close to half of the Indian Muslim population. Now these states are the most under developed states of India. Hindus are doing just as bad in these states. End of the day its all about money. If people have money they get their kids good education, irrespective of religion. There is no discrimination there.

Well like I mentioned in the stats posted earlier, Pakistanis have a much lower primary enrolment rate than Gujrati muslims and matriculation rate is also much lower as well.

What discrimination are they facing that they(Pakistanis) are so behind Gujrati muslims in terms of education?

Again, when you compare muslims in the south like Kerala, TN, Karantaka, AP, their educational and income levels will be even higher. On the other hand if you concetrate on Assam, WB or UP muslims then there indicators just as their neighbours would be lower. Religion plays only one sometimes an insignificant role in the overall scheme of things.

What plays more is economic and social class. So mainly Dalit and OBC muslims that comprise the majority of the Muslims have been historically poor and are only now catching up. While Parsi, Jain and upper caste Hindus and even Muslims for that matter have been historically been well of and are so even now. After all the richest self made Muslim Entrepenuear is an Indian Muslim - Azim Premji. He also happened to the most prominent Muslim face in the Tech forums at the Davos Economic Forum this year as well.

Picking and choosing might be satisfying to someone's ego, but the reality is much different.

This post brought a smile to my face , because I know most of the personalities personally, i would say decently well. for example" shabana had acted in several of my grandfathers movies. But it was nothing criminal from my side i.e. my involvement. I was just a young HINDU college kid back then with a bollywood family

anyways , this is shabana's husband ( in English) about India to a Pakistani reporter. this claim she could not get a house because of being muslim is as bogus as it comes. even before she married Javed , she had a great house . LOL, I was once denied a house in a christian catholic society in mahim, mumbai because they only wanted catholics to live there. Hence hindus are discriminated against in india.

My muslim landlord in Singapore does not let out his house to chinese, hence chinese are discrminated against in Singapore.

With all honesty, being devout or religious really has nothing to do with economic development. Infact, where the government fails, its the religious organisations that play a role in filling up the gap. Wether it be schools of girls or boys or higher education pharma or engineering colleges. They tend to be more philanthropic as well and the cycle of giving continues once a person has benefited from it.
This applies to all religious communities.

And Islam has no barring on having a small family. The problem here are cultural norms that are the cause of being backward. For example, girls education is not disallowed in Islam. Also forced marriages or opposition to same caste/gotra marriage is also contrary to Islamic teachings. Same thing goes for family planning as well. Infact, even in conservative Afghanistan, the mullas there have supported family planning showing that its just a misconception among people that it is opposed in Islam. Coming to family sizes, it is also more related to poor families having larger family sizes wether it be for more hands to work on the farm or due to lack of family planning facilities availble.

Muslims-5.5
Sikhs-5.2
Hindus -4.9
Christians-4.4

So really household sizes are not very different statistically when come down to the stats. Also Sikhs despite having a larger household size are more prosperous. A result of Punjab and Haryana being prosperous ofcourse which is where most of the Sikhs live.

So changing religious beliefs is not the issue that needs consideration here. It is targeting socio-economically backward groups like GoI has done with other groups like SC/ST/OBC and bring them on par with education and employment. And ofcourse the community itself including rich Indians should step in and be more charitable and spend money where the govt. can't reach. This includes all of us who have extra cash to spare which should be contributed to various NGOs that are working on literacy, health and other projects.

but it's also a truth that muslims don't give much importance to education..after primary/basic education most youngsters will turn in to some kind of business, girls are married as soon as they rech 18, family planning wise also muslims lag behind..but would you believe in christians priests offer money to have third child ? one of my married friend told me.
