CHANDIGARCH: Kashmir Singh, who was freed from Pakistani jail after 35 years, on Friday admitted that he was an Indian spy and did his best to serve the country, but deplored that successive governments at the Centre did nothing for his family.

"After my arrest in 1974, the successive governments did nothing for my family. I did the duty assigned to me as a spy, but the government after my arrest did not bother to spend a single penny for my family," a calm and composed looking Singh, who was accompanied by his wife Paramjeet Kaur, told reporters here.

Sixtyseven-year-old Singh thanked God for being kind to him and said the various governments at the Centre did nothing for any of the prisoners languishing in various jails in Pakistan.

Sixty-seven-year-old Singh thanked God for being kind to him and said the various governments at the Centre did nothing for any of the prisoners languishing in various jails in Pakistan.

"The Central government did not bother to take care of my family following my arrest. The government does only the paper work," he said.

Asked whether he was sent to Pakistan by the Military Intelligence and the route he took to go there, Singh said, "even Pakistan authorities failed to get this information from me".

"I was paid Rs 400 as salary...as per duty, I went to serve the country," he said.

Asked what he would like to say for some other people who are working in similar kind of professions, Singh said "I was a spy and did my duty...about others I will not comment...I am not President of the country to give reply to such queries".

Singh, who was lodged in seven different jails in Pakistan, said "I will not tell the story of my ordeal in Pakistani prisons as it will damage the cases of about 100 other such prisoners languishing in jails there".

"Only I can say that I am a firm believer of God and even offered namaz and kept roza (fast) in the Pakistani jails," he said.

When asked how she managed to sustain her family, Kaur said "I worked as maid".

"After my husband's arrest, the Central government gave no compensation to the family and left me in lurch," she said.

He said in Pakistani prisons he was known by the name of 'Ibrahim'.

"I was kept in solitary confinement and remained chained for 17 long years," he said.

Earlier, Singh, along with his wife, met Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in Chandigarh.

Singh released on humanitarian grounds says Burney

Caretaker Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney on Friday said Indian spy Kashmir Singh was released on humanitarian grounds as it was not fair to put him in death cell for years.

Commenting on Kashmir Singh's interview that he had gone to Pakistan for spying, Ansar said it was surprising for him. Indeed he (Kashmir) has been pushed to issue such statement. Such statements can harm Indo-Pak relations.

If he was culprit he should have been hanged in 1978 when his mercy petition was rejected by the president, he told private TV channel.

Perhaps Kashmir Singh is pushed to issue such statements, he said adding "I strived for his release only to please my Allah."

Also in India people started raising voice in favour of Pakistani prisoners.

He said efforts are in final stages to secure release of 25 Pakistani prisoners from India. The prisoners would return Pakistan within a month. Some of them are languishing in Indian prisons for the last 25 years. He said he was in contact with Indian authorities to get them released as soon as possible.

To a question he said body of a Pakistani prisoner will arrive from India within a day or two days. He said he was told that the body is being buried in India but he has sent emissaries to prevent this.

He vowed complete investigation for ascertaining cause of the death of Pakistani in India.

Kashmir Singh, 61, was freed by Pakistan after 35 years and crossed the border to India on Tuesday, where he was given a hero's welcome and showered with rose petals. “I was a spy and did my duty,” admitted Singh, the Press Trust of India news agency reported, adding he was paid about 400 rupees (10 dollars) a month for his work.“ I went to serve the country,” he told reporters in Chandigarh, the capital of northern Punjab state, but declined to say which Indian agency employed him and how he entered Pakistan. “Even Pakistan authorities failed to get this information from me,” he said. Singh, who hails from a village in Punjab, criticised the Indian government for failing to help him after he was caught in 1973, the report said. This makes the case for the other accused Indian spies in Pakistani jails very bad. Since one turned out to be a lair then all of them could be lying. We might of let one go but we still have hundreds more and they have hundreds more. I think we should trade.

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Human Rights Ansar Burney has said India would release 25 Pakistani prisoners in return for Kashmir Singh.

Talking to Aaj TV after Kashmir Singh’s admission that he was an Indian spy, Burney said he might have been forced to make the statement.

He said the decision to release Singh was correct as it added to Pakistan’s dignity and enhanced its image abroad. The minister said the Constitution did not allow two punishments for one crime.

APP quoted him as telling Express News that if Singh was a spy, he should have been hanged in 1978 when the president rejected his mercy petition He said India was set to release 25 Pakistani prisoners who would return to Pakistan within a month.

To a question, he said the body of a Pakistani prisoner would arrive from India within a day or two. He said the cause of his death would be investigated.

Embarrasing situation for GOP. However I think Kashmir Singh has made the case of other Indian prisoners weak. Now GOP will think twice perhaps thrice before pardoning any one else.

Yes we should send an invocie. I have calculated the cost on discounted rates as under:
Per day cost of boarding/lodging & laundry = Pak. Rs. 250
35 years cost = Pak. Rs. 3,193,750
Late charges @ 2% = Pak. Rs. 63,875
Total cost = Pak. Rs. 3,257,625

Hi,

It is not a loss for GOP but rather that of india. Pakistan had always stated that he was a spy---Kashmir Singh just could not contain himself and blurted it out because his wife never recieved any payments from his employer. He had already served his time. So a public admission of his personal guilt is also a public admission of indian govt being invovled in this scandal as well.

This poor guy who is on the death row now, is going to pay the price for Kshmir's poor judgement---quite a few others will pay that price as well in the longer run. If he could have shut his mouth for so long---he could have stayed put, but I guess he wanted to punish his employer for abandoning his family.

All the remaining prisoners of India should be immediately executed. With out wasting any time and money on them.

Our NGOs and government officials honestly speaking are not sincere with Pakistan neither they have their own voice nor thoughts they are just carrying foreign agenda.

Our prisoner was killed there if this is the attitude of India than a Pakistani’s life is more precious than the whole India.

Yesterday I saw on TV that he was saying that India will release 30 prisoners. This shows Ansar Burney’s credibility and as usual India’s deceiving capabilities.
