Indian grandfather speaks out over 'assault' by Alabama police

US prosecutors say they plan to try a police officer for a third time for allegedly using excessive force against an Indian grandfather who was pushed to the ground while he went for a morning walk.

Eric Parker has been tried twice in a federal court on the charge of use of excessive force - both times the jury failed to reach a unanimous decision.

The incident in February this year left Sureshbhai Patel partially paralysed.

In an exclusive interview with the BBC, Mr Patel's family say they hope the officer involved, Eric Parker, goes to prison for what happened.

Mr Parker is still awaiting trial for a state charge of third degree assault. The family is also suing for damages.

The policeman says he didn't mean to hurt Mr Patel, but acted in the interests of officer safety.

The case made international headlines - the Indian government raised concerns, prompting an apology from the Governor of Alabama.

Our North America correspondent Rajini Vaidyanathan has this special report.

The police (and the caller) saw an old brown guy walking around and clearly identified him as a threat to the White civilized folk and had to use excessive force to contain him. We can't have old brown guys roaming White neighborhoods and scaring the poor White folk. The defense said it's Mr. Patel's fault because he didn't speak English--clearly he had it coming to him. Mr. Patel's family can forget about any justice, as the reporter noted, the jury has failed to convict him twice now.

You're not going to get Whites to put away one of their own even when they're clearly in the wrong. Why do you think Blacks are outraged and the Black Lives Matter campaign has garnered so much attention?

What the hell was the man doing in Alabama ?

Visiting his son's family. He walked a block away from his home and someone called the cops to report a mysterious "black" guy walking around houses. The cops injured the old man badly by taking him down forcefully injuring his spine.

If Obama was not escorted by the secret service he too would be at the receiving end of these idiots.
