ISLAMABAD - Mystery still shrouds prolonged delay in the release of a key UN document that highlighted Pakistan's efforts towards nuclear non-proliferation. The top hierarchy of the international body has kept questionable mum over the issue.
The United Nations Permanent Mission in Pakistan had sent note verbale S/AC.44/2007/1 to the Chairman United Nations Security Committee regarding Pakistan's role in prevention of nuclear proliferation and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs). The document was to be released on June 3, 2008 while it was released on August 3, 2010. The UNSC Committee was established in pursuant to resolution 1540 (2004) for the prevention of nuclear proliferation and WMDs.
Since August last year, The Nation had made dozens of attempts to get the UN's version in this regard but all these attempts went in vain. The UN Pakistan does not deal with the issue while top bosses at UN Headquarters in New York are silent over the issue. On August 26, The Nation had unearthed this matter in a news item. Prior to its publication, this scribe made several calls and sent several emails to UN Chief Spokesperson in New York Martin Nesirsky but UN's response was not received.
On December 27 last, a UN spokesperson at UN Headquarters, desiring anonymity, promised that he would give all the relevant details and UN's on-the-record version over the issue to The Nation not later than last Monday, January 3, 2011. Despite waiting till the filing of this report on Tuesday night, the official did not get back to this newspaper nor did he return calls and emails.
On the other hand, sources in international body cite the overwhelming influence of Indian diplomat Vijay Nambiar, Chief of Staff to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, as the key sole reason that explained why a note verbale that proactively reflected Pakistan's efforts to curtail the spread of nuclear proliferation and WMDs could not see light of the day for 26 good months. Nambiar had assumed the charge of his incumbent duties on January 1, 2007. The Indian diplomat was reportedly instrumental in stopping and discarding some hard-hitting annual reports of UN agencies regarding India's atrocities in Occupied Kashmir.

So we can say that UN is hacked or become a useless organization defining its role in key problems showing its monopolized politics, organization which must be non polarized!

Well come to share your opinions over this topic.

Goes to affirm that UN is another globalist organization serving as front mouth piece for colonial powers! The India and Indians in general have a quassi-colonial mentality. Where ever they go, serving the mother land is key responsibility before any kind of interests and duties assigned to them. Have a look around, having a few indians in any media outlet effectively turns it into auxiliary times of India!

what the hell are PAK Diplomats doing? having fun, enjoying benefits etc...

The report should be released. It would be interesting to see what Pakistan has done to help nuclear non-proliferation. The biggest thing that they could have done is to hand over AQ Khan to UN or any other neutral authority to investigate his proliferation business. But that didn't happen.

Why trouble the UN, when you can read it here. Both the US and GoI released the full text of the deal more than 2 years ago. Unlike some countries we dont need to hide our nuclear deals. :azn:

Are you serious or just because its Pakistan here we are talking about all logic goes goes out of the window:disagree:.You just don't hand over the guy who has the secrets about your strategic arsenal.

On a side note who said UN is neutral.

There were ways to get around the problem. AQ Khan could have been interviewed in the presence of Pakistani officials with questions being strictly limited to his network and not Pakistan's own program.

And are we questioning the UN's impartiality and legitimacy now? Surely, that also throws out the 'UN designated disputed region argument for Kashmir', right?

AQ Khan was interviewed by Pakistani officials on behalf of the international community who forwarded their concerns and questions to Pakistani authorities.

I fail to see what the issue is here.

Veracity. Credibility. The international community doesn't look at your system to be incapable of being influenced by extraneous factors, especially when a 'national hero' like AQ Khan is invovled.

.
BTW... before moving to the UN, if i am not wrong then this same Mr Vijay Nambiar served in pakistan too as an indian highcommissioner.

A 'national hero' who was removed from his position, convicted and then pardoned, but still removed from any position of authority.

I'd say Pakistan has amply demonstrated that it is willing to rectify security breaches and take measures to remove even 'national heroes' from the scene.

In any case, given AQ Khan's involvement with highly secretive and sensitive Pakistani nuclear, missile and weapons programs, the international community should realize that it is simply not possible to hand over AQ Khan to anyone outside of Pakistani authorities for national security reasons.

The position taken by Pakistan is very rational and justified.
