Mr Geelani was due to address a news conference

A prominent separatist leader in Indian-administered Kashmir, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, has been arrested.

Mr Geelani - who had been under house arrest for more than two months - was taken into custody by the police on Wednesday afternoon.

He had called for a three-day shutdown over the alleged rape and killing of two women in the town of Shopian.

Mr Geelani was scheduled to announce the next stage in the protest programme at a press conference.

But police raided his house before that and took him into custody.

The Muslim-majority Kashmir valley is closed for the third successive day in protest against the deaths in Shopian.

The alleged rapes and murders have generated much anger

The state government on Monday announced an inquiry into the allegations, insisting at the same time that the "initial findings do not suggest either rape or murder".

Shops, businesses and schools remained shut on Wednesday and most traffic is off the roads.

Police have imposed curfew-like restrictions in Srinagar and other towns to prevent violent demonstrations.

In a related development, the president of the pro-India People's Democratic Party, Mehbooba Mufti, visited Shopian along with a number of her party colleagues on Wednesday.

Thousands of people gathered in the town's main market ahead of her visit, calling on her to resign from her seat in the state assembly before addressing them.

She chose not to address the gathering and instead walked into the nearby police station.

Police fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd who tried to storm the police station. Ms Mufti's motorcade was pelted with stones as she left the town.

Meanwhile a by-election has been held in the Hazratbal constituency in Srinagar.

Police and paramilitary forces had been deployed in strength to prevent any unrest. Officials say voting was peaceful.

And what ever happened to Freedom of Speech?

I thought India was the "world's largest democracy".

India is more like the world's largest hypocrisy.

Are you Kashmiri? If not, who are you to speak for the Kashmiri people?

Kashmiris have every right to be angry over the rape and murder of their people and these protests are not violent. Kashmiris are peaceful people, its the Indian army who get violent.

India’s atrocious
human rights record in Kashmir is an established fact: Amnesty
International, Human Rights Watch and India’s own National Human
Rights Commission have produced copious reports documenting the
repressive conduct of the Indian security forces. Year after year, the US
State Department’s human rights reports have spoken of extra-judicial
killings on an almost daily basis, the systematic use of rape as a weapon
of terror and the routine recourse to torture to extract information from
suspected militants. Methods used by the Indian army, the border security
force and the police have included beating, sexual abuse, burning
with cigarettes and hot rods, suspension by the feet, the crushing of
limbs by heavy rollers and electric shocks. The security force personnel
have carried out those activities with virtual impunity and only a tiny
proportion has faced prosecution.Throughout the 1990s this brutal display of state power failed to break the insurgency-Owen Bennet Jones
And the insurgency is still fresh.

Kashmir is an integral part of India; thus kashmiris are Indians, and all Indians are my brothers and sisters:smitten: hence I have all the right to talk about my people:enjoy:
besides you cant generalize kashmiris with handful of separatists .

Do you honestly believe Kashmir Insurgency can live without Kashmiris support?

 ONLY INDIANS SAY THIS. Wherver you go anywhere in the world, everyone says Kashmir is a disputed region. Kashmir is recognized as a disputed region by the entire world except India.

And if you care so much about Kashmiris, tell your army to stop raping and stop killing them.

who are you tell us to shut up.

Sometime a question arises in my mind. When kashmir is a disputed region how come india are running government there. Even after repeated requests from pakistan leaders i don't understand why america is not keen on solving the issue?

Because Indians have a very close bond with Zionists.

They use the excuse of "Islamic terrorists" even though Kashmiris are very peaceful people.

With all the peaceful protests Kashmiris have made against Indian rule, the world doesn't pay attention to the cries of the innocent Kashmiris because Zionists and Hindu majority India have a strong bond and common hatred for Muslims who speak out against their atrocities.

Please don't be so emotional ... In relaity, if Kashmiris have the opportuntity to determine their future, majority would either go with Pakistan or a completly independent Kashmir.

India is not part of furute for Kashmiris ... Indian politicians understand this privately and Indian armed forces also understand this but it is the Indian public which don't mind travelling to Kashmir and see the hate of Kashmiris first hand.
