One of the world's deadliest nuclear powered attack submarines, the Yasen-class's inclusion will add deeper strategic depth to Indian Navy's Blue Water Naval ambitions

India is interested in renting the multi-purpose Project 885 Yasen class submarine from Russia. This is being seen as a sign of another forthcoming India-Russia collaborative venture for the construction of six new SSN for Indian Navy.

NEW DLEHI
— A high-level Indian delegation will be visiting Russia shortly to finalize an agreement on renting the Yasen class submarine for the Indian Navy.

Government sources told Sputnik that renting the second nuclear powered attack submarine from Russia would result in the introduction of newer technology into India, which would eventually pave the way for Russian collaboration with India for it program to build six new SSN.

Russia had originally offered Akula class submarine to India which India already had in the form of the INS Chakra. Experts consider that there may be some adversities due to the different characteristics of the two boats, but this may be more than offset by the newer technology the Yasen brings into India's own SSN-building program in the longer term.

Executive Director of National Maritime Foundation Indian Navy Captain Gurpreet S Khurana says, “It may not be a bad idea to get the Yasen-class as the second boat. Its design is known to be based on the Akula, and yet it is more advanced and capable than its predecessor.”

Project-75I that relates to the manufacturing of six new nuclear attack submarines at an approximate cost of $8.5 bln is being held up due to a delay finalizing the Defense Procurement Policy 2016. Now the policy is ready, the tender likely to be issued by end of this year.

Meanwhile, French ship building company DCNS’ alleged involvement in the Scorpene Submarine data leak controversy makes a strong case for another India-Russia collaborative venture for this project.

Captain Khurana says that the Indian government’s decision to locally build the six nuclear powered attack submarines is driven by the country’s maritime interest in distant areas. “A SSN is required to influence events in distant areas of the country's maritime interest, where conventional surface and integral aviation cannot operate for whatever reason. The Indian government seems to have realized this national imperative while approving the indigenous construction of six SSNs,” says Captain Khurana.

. . .
I over heard this chatter , about the indians attempting to persuade the Russians about a possibility of possibly acquiring the rights of yet another Submarine. Now if my memory serves me right , they were building that fabulous French sub.

I could not force myself to remain silent , after finding out their unholy ambitions. Certainly the honorable Russian will see the truth , that Indians are just about as trust-able as that Obama lad. One moment he is winning that ambitious Nobel peace award and another moment he is looking for that invisible red carpet in China.

I find , that little tea party did not turned out quite well in end. Speaking of which it is rather later in the evening I must take my tea break, which is far more attainable then Indians and their future prospects as a world power.

I do have a small chatter to do with French head of state , after all we do need to talk about those lost manuals for their secret sub program.

I sure wish the Indians pack some Umbrellas just in case Putin is running late , I heard it rains sometimes in Moscow. Not as much as in London , but just in case if it rains , I sure don't want my Indian friends to be drenched in the tears of their own misery.

On topic - I'm pretty certain that IN will definitely receive atleast 1 more SSN from Russia. However I'm not sure about the said SSN being the Yasen-class. The orders for this class are nowhere near fulfilled and currently the Russian Navy needs all the Yasens it can get for itself.

Unlikely they can send one off to India.

In all likelihood, the K-322 Kashalot (commissioned '88 as per Wiki) or the undesignated improved Akula-class submarine Iribis (construction stopped midway, might resume again) might be acquired.

Both subs can come in. If we go for the Yasen, it will take us 10 years at least to get one. In the meantime, we can order one more Akula, the Kashalot.

the burn is quite deep here.

Even if we order it now , it won't come before a decade. Russian Navy is to receive 12 SSN and 10 SSBN on a priority basis, so that they can resume their strategic patrols.

You are under estimated the deal. With this deal and future SSN programs Russia will renovate its nuclear submarine program and ssk fleet in very big way.

Better scrap P75I and convert it to SSN procurement from Russia. Mean while order cheap kilos in large numbers both off the shelf purchase and made in India

.
Or we can lease both Kashalot and iribis while involving russia in our indigenous ssn project.
Since yasen have not been delivered to russia, i dont think they will lease it to us.But we certainly built it at home with assistance:-)

. . .
This is how a conversation between India and Russia might go............
India..........we want to lease your yasen class sub.
Russia.......No sorry, not on offer.

India........ not only we want your Yasen class but we want your next sub being built for Russian Navy.
Russia......why would we do that?

India........Because, if you do we will either give you the contract for P75I or you can help design our next generation SSN. A deal worth billions and strategic partnership.
Russia.........................
Okay let's do it....but we want 1.5 billion for each sub.

India......Sure, we are open for discussion on pricing but if you want this tender, here is a list of other hardware we need you to give us as part of 50% offset.

This is exactly how it'll go, Russia happy India happy..

And pakistan still doesn't get SU-35.:hitwall:.

Our interest in Yasen is true but look at this date

October 2015 and run up to the India Russia Yearly dialogue. Its the same this year.
I am not ruling Yasen sub out bcz if Russia wishes a bigger foothold in our N program and wants to shield French side from it, the only way is Yasen sub and its tech or else we go ahead with barracuda tech.

But in general its playing to the gallery and showing India Russia partnership and thats why this news is out here.

IMHO its not Yasen but a sub derived from Yasen sub tech downsized to meet our SSN size. Yasen is too big and thus does not make sense for us. Also Yasen atm orders are rather not completed with Russian Navy itself to actually spare one and lease it to us. Lastly Yasen costs $2.4 Bn and a customization for India will also cost a fortune. So a 10 year lease wil be in excess of $1.5-1.8 Bn surely at say $150-180 Mn a year types. Thats as good as a new SSN cost of course its readily available for our fleet in such a lease case

.
Now that India has joined the MTCR, will there be still be any restrictions imposed if this lease goes through ?
