A total number of 846 Armed forces personnel have made supreme sacrifices on the Siachen glaciers since 1984. The death during the course of duties on Siachen glaciers is treated as 'battle casualties' and enhanced compensation is paid to the next of the kin which includes-enhanced ex-gratia of Rs.20 lakhs, liberalized family pension equal to emoluments last drawn, Death-cum-Retirement-Gratuity, compensation from Army Group Insurance Scheme and ex-gratia lump sum compensation from the Central Government. Apart from the above, liberal contributions are also made from different funds, such as - Army officers benevolent fund, Army wives welfare association fund and Army central welfare fund. The family members of the deceased soldiers are also entitled for education concession card and air travel concession card.

Averaged indian Casualities averaged out to be around 31 per year for 28 years.

damn we need to research on better equipments and survival methods up there

That's a bad performance of our defense program. We need to improve it, it seems.

^^^Its true!!:agree:I know this well that there is a huge demand within the armed forces to serve in Siachen and is something that doesn't come easy!!

Hmm better perks, a gold star in resume for promotion or just plain good patriotism ?

It's very rare these days to hear causalities in Siachen.. the equipment and supplies to soldiers are one of the best in class!!
My cousin part of Rajputana Rifles once complaining that we was sweating inside his suit in -46 degrees and admit that amount of chocolate and Mango Fruties he had in short posting was more than what he had in his entire life. It shows that we are taking good care of our boys ...

and still , you have hundreds of jawans who cant get a siachen posting even though they want to , coz the damn waiting list is too long........It takes a special kind of madman to make a good indian soldier.

TRUE!!

:kiss3: ..

and Aman ki Asha lunatic media was exaggerating the numbers in many thousands.

And people not exposed to defense related matter accept this number without any question. The catch phrase during the avalanche that killed Pakistani soldiers was "Both India & Pakistan lost thousands in Siachen".

Well this is the first time GOI giving the figure regarding causalities in siachen sector. 846 is far less than what has been claimed in the media, For example 5000 in this report.

This figure will help to give the accurate statistics of the loss.

Note: Even single loss of life is regrettable.

Stop lying man. Sweating in that temperature is very dangerous.

Some excerpts from the link

"Forced to fight uphill, Pakistan is believed to have suffered the lion's share of battle casualties on the Saltoro. Indian troops, who hold higher positions with more difficult access, were estimated to have initially suffered more environment-related deaths, before better equipment, procedures and training brought casualties down to a trickle since the mid-1990s."
