One opposition activist shot dead in Satkhira
RTNN Staff correspondent, Satkhira: An activist of Shibir, the student wing of opposition Jamaat-e-Islami party, was shot to death and several others including a pedestrian injured with bullets as law enforcers opened fire during a clash between Jamaat-Shibir activists and joint force members at Gobindakathi in Sadar upazila of the district on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Hafizul Islam, 27, son of Lokman Ali of the area.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Satkhira sadr thana Enamul Hoque told that in support of ongoing blockade Jamaat-Shibir activists put barricade with tree logs and bricks on Satkhira-Jessore highway at Jhaudanga area around 8:30am.
Being informed Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members rushed to the scene at 9am when Jamaat-Shibir activists threw brick bats targeting them ensuing a clash between two sides.
Joint forces responded by firing rubber bullets, shotgun rounds and lobbing teargas canisters leaving Hafizul dead on the spot and the pedestrian bullet-hit.
The pedestrian was identified as Haran Chandra Pal, a businessman. He has been admitted to Satkhira Sadr Hospital in a critical condition.
Police arrested 7 people from different places around the area.
