Indian Army to build air base in Dooars - Hindustan Times

The Indian Army is all set to come up with an air base in strategically located North Bengal.

The Army has identified 750 acres of land near Damdim in the Dooars in Jalpaiguri district and has sought the state government’s help in acquiring 250 acres of land.

A high level meeting was held in Siliguri chaired by North Bengal development minister Goutam Deb where senior army officers led by Lt General AJ Singh, the GOC of 33 Corps was present.

Talking to reporters, Deb said the army requires 750 acres of land for the base at Shaugaon near Damdim.

The army is already in possession of 500 acres of land and has sought the state’s government’s help to acquire the rest.

Deb said the state government would help the army as land can always be acquired for national interest.

The minister added that the army has also sought help in constructing an alternative road connecting Sikkim with the rest of the country via Gorubathan, Lava, Algara and Pedong.

The proposed base comes at a time when China has improved rail and road links to Nathula border.

The new road and the base would help Indian army to increase mobility in a region bordering China, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan.

The army is also likely to set up a modern armoury near its proposed air base.

North Bengal has three air force bases at Hashimara, Binnaguri and Bagdogra.

Unlike the Chinese move to expand railway connectivity up to Sino-India border near Nathula, the proposed Rs. 1339.46 crore Sevoke-Rangpo railway, the foundation for which was laid on October 30 2009, is gathering dust.

Vice-President Mohammed Hamid Ansari laid the foundation stone in presence of Mamata Banerjee the then railway minister and chief minister of Sikkim Pawan Chamling.

The 52.70 km long rail connectivity from Sevoke near Siliguri, to Rangpo in Sikkim is yet to get clearance from the union ministry of environment and forest.

The state government has been accusing the Centre of delaying the project.

The railway survey up to Nathula has been completed.

Airforce's Bagdogra base is already there but still good move by Army as they need a big base to operate their LCH, Rudras and other helis. Another good development is railway line upto Rangpo(bengal-sikkim border town) as that will serve great purpose in quick army mobilisation and people of sikkim.

.
One important point to note is that the positioning of this new airbase is more significant than meets the eye.
Analysis
1. If only air support was the issue, Bagdogra and Guwahati would have sufficed. But this serves a more important purpose.
2. Wherever airbases are created, a local defence base is also created for local defense requirements.
3. Air force Ground crew and their support will also have to be based nearby.
4. The force strength - Air force, support infantry and Army Logistics Corps - will increase dramatically.

Naturally the reinforcement of the Chicken's neck is in progress. The objective might be to support Bhutan, and put pressure on Nepal, Bhutan as well as Bangladesh not to fall into China's lap.
The other objective would be slightly harsh. In case of a massive attack, both from the north as well as from the South - the corridor is likely to be cut by enemy forces. In that situation this base can perform as a pivot point to help open the supply route to the NE. The land favors defence. There are dense forests and swamps - unlike the plains in Assam in the east and the West Bengal in the west.
Airforce's Bagdogra base is already there but still good move by Army as they need a big base to operate their LCH, Rudras and other helis.

dude, please remember one thing:

you can build what airport on the border, it is up to you. that place is 2000km away from our capital or any population center.
on the other hand, we just need to deploy some rocket launcher on the border, that place is 300km away from your capital.

please keep this in mind.

also, every single dollar you spent on defense means your children get 1 less dollar on their education. you know which nation is leading the education competition and which nation is better at making money.

look at how many top quality research papers (e.g. the ones published on Science and Nature) indian universities are publishing, then compare it to the Chinese one.

you are losing in every single aspect of our competition.

This close enough?

China Finance Minister Expects GDP Growth of 7% in 2013

Nomura: ( China 6% in 2014)

.

India's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at 4.8% in the fourth quarter of FY13, marginally lower than an ET Now poll estimate of 4.9%.

dude, the Communist Party of China is not your big mouth indian loser party, when they tell you the growth is about 7%, it means it will be 8% at least. Check the performance of the first two quarters.

Nomura? what is that? a tiny little small japanese investment rubbish firm. why should I listen to losers like Nomura?

If China is prevented from Stealing Indian land, and subjugating Indian people to a communist dictatorship, that is a victory for India. If China invades, we will meet you on the battlefield ready to fight to the last man, bullet, and missile.

We are not afraid of you. Take your bullying attitude and shove it.

.
Why is china spending on defence then ???

1. provide security to the region and China itself.
2. to force india to spend beyond its capacity so less can be put on education and R&D. we two nations are in a competition.

you mean until the last rapist, the last imported Israeli bullet and last Russian missile?

well done.

but sorry, we don't want to have war with india, nothing to gain from doing that. we just want to force you to feel insecure and keep you spending on foreign weapons, the purpose is simple: to keep your nation and people poor.

if you look, it worked so well so far.
