nope, you don't jail the victims but the perperators. deporting them doesn't solve the problem. the article says that those women aborts their babies since their families wants them to give birth to baby boys. if anything, it's their families who needs to be jailed. but is it always the best solutions? why don't take the education route and educate their culture instead of rotting them in jail?

Indian Govt to combat this backward practice has issued a scheme for girl child welfare deposit

PANIPAT: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched a small deposit scheme for girl child, as part of the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' campaign, which would fetch an interest rate of 9.1 per cent and provide income tax rebate.

'Sukanya Samridhi Account' can be opened at any time from the birth of a girl child till she attains the age of 10 years, with a minimum deposit of Rs 1000. A maximum of Rs 1.5 lakh can be deposited during the financial year.

The account can be opened in any post office or authorised branches of commercial banks.

"The scheme primarily ensures equitable share to a girl child in resources and savings of a family in which she is generally discriminated as against a male child," said a government statement.

In an effort to motivate parents to open an account in the name of a girl child and for her welfare to deposit maximum of their savings upto the prescribed limits, higher rates of interest at 9.1 per cent is proposed to be given on the deposits on annually compounded basis with income tax concession in this financial year, the statement said.

The account will remain operative for 21 years from the date of opening of the account or marriage of the girl child after attaining 18 years of age.

To meet the requirement of higher education expenses, partial withdrawal of 50 per cent of the balance would be allowed after the girl child has attended 18 years of age.

"The provision of not allowing withdrawal from the account till the age of 18 has been kept to prevent early marriage of girls," the statement said.

The Prime Minister handed over bank account details to five girls under the 'Sukanya Samridhi Yojna' (girl child prosperity scheme).

(CNN)Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promoted a new initiative to address the country's skewed sex ratio: a #SelfieWithDaughter!

In his radio program on Sunday, the 64-year-old leader appealed to parents to post their pictures with their daughters on social media.

The idea was originally floated by a village head in Haryana, a state in northern India with one of the country's worst child-sex ratios.


Sunil Jaglan, who heads the panchayat or the council of Haryana's Bibipur village, has been encouraging fathers to WhatsApp their selfies with their daughters.

In his radio address, the Indian Prime Minister said he was inspired by Jaglan's efforts -- more so because they were carried out in a region with a high incidence of gender imbalance.

The Indian government has in the past also launched a Save-Daughter, Teach-Daughter campaign called Beti Bachao, Beti Padao in Hindi.

Modi urged parents to add a tagline to their selfies with daughters in any language of their choice. He said he would retweet the pictures with the most inspiring taglines.

Indians' preference for sons over daughters manifested itself in a worrisome population imbalance in the world's second-most populous nation, according to a 2011 census report.

The statistics recorded an alarming drop in the percentage of girls among India's preschoolers. For every 1,000 boys up to 6 years old, the report counted 914 girls, a drop from 927 a decade ago.

That's the lowest ratio since India gained independence in 1947

In 2008, the new Australian Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd, said Sorry to the Aborigines for the "Stolen Generation". The "Stolen Generation" were Aborigines that were "forcefully" removed from their families to "anglicise" them. A very popular bloggist in Melbourne, Andrew Bolt, has consistently requested that the government and human rights groups name just 10 of these children that were forcefully removed due to this (and not due to child abuse). Thomas Robert Malthus wrote that, in the New South Wales region, when the mother died sucking infants were buried alive with her.In the Darling River region, infanticide was practiced "by a blow on the back of the head, by strangling with a rope, or chocking with sand".

In Queensland a tribal woman could have children after the age of thirty. Otherwise babies would be killed.

The Australian Aranda tribes in the Northern Territory used the method of choking the newborn with coal, sand or kill her with a stick.

According to James George Frazer, in the Beltana tribes in South Australia it was customary to kill the first-born.

Twins were always killed by the Arrernte in central Australia. In the Luritcha tribe occasional cannibalism of young children occurred.

Aram Yengoyan calculated that, in Western Australia, the Pitjandjara people killed 19% of their newborns.

In the 19th century the native Tasmanians were exterminated by the colonists, who regarded them as a degenerate race. Richard H. Davies (fl. 1830s - 1887), a brother of Archdeacon Davies, wrote that Tasmanian "females have been known to desert their infants for the sake of suckling the puppies", which were later used for hunting. Like other tribal Australians, when the mother died the child was buried as well.
