I think conquest needs a case for it. If you look at the northern extremes of India, the 'conquered' lands went up till it became economically nonviable to go any further (himalayas). Towards the west, beyond the Punjab and it's fertile plans, there was no real incentive to get into the arid mountainous reaches of Afghanistan.
People came invading as the loot and prosperity was higher in the fertile plains of indus and then ganges.
(I have taken out factors such as proximity to conflict zones and land trade routes in the argument above. Muslims and Christians benefited a lot as a result of the persian/sassanids/ Roman warfare and then later the crusades (constant warfare becomes a big driver for innovation in weaponry and tactics).)
