10 C 17s for just 1.8 billion?

AFA I remeber the deal was gonna be somewhere around 4-5 billion with maintainance thrown in.

So either we are having a follow on contract for the bells and whistles for these 10 birds or.....

Actually C-17 can be used for both tactical and strategic roles. The difference between the two aircrafts is the weight class, and the carrying capacity. The C-130 is medium class and C-17 is in the very heavy class (as IAF calls it). The C-130J can carry about 20 tonnes of cargo, while the C-17 can carry 77 tonnes. The former can carry 64 fully equipped paratroopers, while the latter can carry 100+.

Well, that thing is operational from the 80's, still without any foreign customer. And given the price tag of $200 million is quite cheap for an aircraft like C-5 given that what we are paying for our C-17s.

Antonov AN-124 is quite reasonably priced ($80-100 million), and is in the same class.
