India - ‘We sent relief on request’,
Sri Lanka - ‘India sent without even us asking for it!’

As the floods in Sri Lanka claimed 27 lives and displaced one million, New Delhi promptly dispatched a relief package to Colombo yesterday. Valued around US $1 million in total, the first 25 tonne-emergency reliefs arrived when an Indian Air Force aircraft touched down in Colombo yesterday morning.

But diplomatic sources in Colombo say that New Delhi and Colombo have momentarily forgotten of the relief operations and are intensely searching for proof of where the flood relief request originated from!

Did Sri Lanka ask for assistance? Or India volunteered on its own?

Sri Lanka President Rajapakse, addressing the press in Colombo yesterday insisted that “we appreciate India’s donation of flood relief.” He promptly added: “India came to Sri Lanka’s assistance without even a request.”

New Delhi then promptly announced that ‘it has responded to a request from the Government of Sri Lanka to send urgent relief assistance for people who have been displaced or affected due to this natural calamity.’ Complicating Colombo’s situation, New Delhi declared “..Top Minister Basil Rajapaksa thanked the Government and the people of India for rushing this assistance to Sri Lanka at such short notice”.

Earlier some Indian friends here want know why China did not delivered flood aid to Sri Lanka, that because we did not request any flood aid from anyone.

India itself delivered flood aid to Sri Lanka, anyway thanks for the flood aid.

well we can discuss that later. but first can we distrubute relief material to needy ones. we can blame each other later.

Requested or not it is the poor people suffering and India should be appreciated for its gesture shown towards suffering people..be it for political motive or not..After the LTTE saga, it is only expected of India to be desperate for mending ties however government and military issues shall not consume civilian matters.

Indian to provide 1MN USD of flood relief

Following the recent flooding due to heavy rains in Sri Lanka, the Government of India has responded to a request from the Government of Sri Lanka to send urgent relief assistance for people who have been displaced or affected due to this natural calamity.

The Government of India has accordingly announced a relief package of $1 million, consisting of dry rations (sugar, pulses, salt and some condiments), Meals Ready to Eat, malted food, blankets, mattresses, bed sheets, and water purification kits & tablets.

An Indian Air Force aircraft arrived in Colombo this morning( 14th Jan) with the first consignment of about 25 tonnes of this assistance. The consignment was symbolically handed over at the Banadaranaike International Airport by the High Commissioner of India, Mr. Ashok K. Kantha, to Hon'ble Basil Rajapaksa, Minister of Economic Development of the Government of Sri Lanka.

Also present on the occasion were the Minister of Disaster Management, Hon'ble Mahinda Amaraweera and the Deputy Minister of Disaster Management, Hon'ble Duleep Wijesekara, together with other senior officers of the Government of Sri Lanka.

Speaking on the occasion, Hon'ble Basil Rajapaksa thanked the Government and the people of India for rushing this assistance to Sri Lanka at such short notice. He said that India was always the first to respond to Sri Lankan's call for assistance. High Commissioner Kantha said that the assistance was a gesture of solidarity on the part of the people and the Government of India with the people and the Government of Sri Lanka. He added that India stood ready to provide further help to meet this humanitarian challenge.

Distribution of the relief material received from India is likely to begin on Saturday, 15 January 2011 in Batticoloa.

The second consignment of relief material from India is expected to reach Colombo on 17 January 2011.
